I am just wondering which ones would be more accurrate?
I am tempted to buy some Prvi 69gr stuff, but I have 300rds worth of 68gr a,,o that can reload. So which do you guys find more accurate? Your reloads, or factory match ammo? |
|
Privi is ok, but even though they say it is match I would not compare it to federal gold metal match or black hills red or blue box. Carefully constructed reloads with good components should be able to do better. That said I have been having inconsistent performance with my reloads and AR. 5 shot groups range from .5" to 1.5".

Just remember, there's no ammo equivalent of the FDA...a manufacturer can put whatever they want on the box. Just because it says "Match", doesn't mean it is. You're probably pretty safe with the big brands, like Hornady, but I wouldn't bet on just any ammo being labeled "Match" as meaning much.
So, with that in mind, if you have to have a general rule, I'd say reloads can be more accurate. |
| I'd say reloads are ALWAYS more accurate. A factory builds ammo for everybodies gun, I can taylor a load for each specific gun. A reloader can spend more time prepping brass to create uniformity and keep the powder charges to exactly the same amount everytime. I will say this, My .308 Rem700 will shoot 1"-3/4" 5 shot groups with fed gold medal match ammo....the ammo which all others is compared to in accuracy. With my handloads I can shoot consistent 1/4" 5 shot groups. |

despite being a fan of prvi in general, their match ammo is just slightly better than the regular and with bullets meant for target shooting. I havw not found it to be particularly accurate.
handloads specific to a particular gun will usually be better than factory, but sometimes a factory load is just perfect for your rifle. amusingly, prvi 55grain soft point 222rem is some of the most accurate ammo I have used in my benchrest rifle. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

| I think the difference between commercially loaded "match" grade ammo and hand loads is generally in how the powder is measured. Consistent powder throws are generally what makes ammo "Match Grade" worthy or not. The issue with bulk loaded commercial ammo is the machines used to measure powder simply cannot be as accurate as the home loader tends to be, for the most part anyway. Two things work against bulk loaded commercial ammo. Ammo is not specifically tuned to a specific gun and the powder throws on most bulk loading equipment tend to vary widely enough to throw accuracy numbers off a bit. IMO |

IMO I would say powder consistency is PART of match accuracy...but ultimatley its based on the harmonics of EACH barrel...hence hand loads are taylored for each rifle. There are some loads that work well in a large variety of firearms. But being able to find what charge works with what rifle, is the key. When I first got into reloading I thought what made accurate ammo was consitency....Though when u start developing loads you find out quick that isnt the case. When all my loads are hand weighed and I load 5 rounds each batch moving up in .3gr incriments and find some batches that print 2"+ groups and some that drop down to 1/4" groups you quickly learn there is more going on than consistent charge weights. |

(75 grain) I was out west hunting prairie dogs with it a couple years ago. It performed well in my gun, not so well in a friend's. I had a WOA SS 1:8 match barrel, my buddy was using a Noveske, and our ammo was from the same lot. Different guns will shoot the same loads differently. |
