What has everyone heard about the new coated Fail Zero parts like bolts, bolt carriers, and uppers?  Is anyone running it yet and have any comments?

At one class I attended over the summer there was a guy using one, a complete BCG.

Failed once....Failed Twice.... then Failed Permanently and he had to get another rifle to finish the day.

If I recall correctly, it was shaving and tearing chunks from his brass.

It works.

All of my AR's have the BCG's, Uppers, Hammers coated... works exactly as advertised... no lube, no malfunctions.

Ive never heard of a problem with the coating, or the BCG's themselves which are made by AO (same company that supplies FN for the military).. they are milspec in testing and manufacture.

The situation described above is the first ive heard of a problem and without more information and data i would be a little leery to say the FZ BCG and even further the coating itself was the cause of the malfunction... and even allowing that it is on pure speculation... i would like to hear more about what the problem actually was, how the manufacturer fixed it.

here is the most comprehensive link to the typical argument that pops up when someone asks about BCG coatings... somewhere in that mess is good information.

I just recently bought an upper, bcg, and spikes battle trigger, but haven't got the upper back from Adco yet. It looks good but I'll tell you in a week or so for sure.

I have had a Spikes BCG with the fail zero for a while. Does it work? Sure... but the metal can't retain any oil, so whenever you shoot all the carbon gets caked onto the components unless they are dripping in oil which defeats the purpose anyway. I shot 60 rounds through mine recently. Started with a clean and oiled rifle. When I got home the bolt would not lock up unless you pulled all the way back on the charging handle and let it go because of the carbon buildup on the inside of the carrier... after 60 rounds! I'm sticking to standard milspec coating from now on. Never had a problem with them, and cleaning is actually easier with them.

ETA: I also have the Spikes battle trigger set. That is a nice item. It really smooths out the trigger pull and even lightens it a bit. However, I'm not so sure that the improvement is worth the $60.

Yep, I had plans to buy one...and still think about it. I had never heard of anything like that. I don't know if it was the coating that caused it but I do know everything else ran fine. That event killed my buying confidence.

I've got one of the BCG's and love it.  It has never seen a drop of oil and one FTE to date.  I've run everything from Tula to M193 and all has worked well.

I bought one and put 250 rds through it w/o a hiccup....this coming weekend I might be able to put another 800-1000 through it and I will update this thread with the results.

Sounds good man, keeps us up to date.  What FZ parts are you running?

I've got 1.5K rounds through my Spike's middy with NiB BCG and LPK. No problems and I use very little oil.

Iv got one in my build, but havent shoot it much yeat. Hopefully that will change being Im back to work as of today

They say "No lube ever" so I tryed it.....no issues.
also no signs in the upper to show its ever even been fired.

Is it worth aprox $100 for a coating? maybe
If you split the $100 by the 5 plated parts...Is the BC  worth $20? hell yes.... Is the Bolt worth $20? Yes...Is the hammer? maybe

My next upper will be coated as well. I already had my upper before I knew of FailZero, or it would be coated.

Cleanup = paper towel

I've got the Spike's NiB Battle Trigger kit and it is a lot smoother than a normal mil-spec trigger.

I have one. I ditched the bolt but kept the carrier.

The bolt face was too tight around the base of the round, I guess because of the coating. It would work for about 1000 rounds or so without cleaning, but then it would start having trouble chambering rounds and finally would just lock up.

Started using regular bolt in the fail zero carrier, problem went away.

The carrier works really well though, stays slick through full auto suppressed fire.

Seriously? I mean like every spec of carbon comes off without scrubbing, not the usual half-assed ARFCOM cleaning?

I have 2 rifles... both with BCG's and Uppers coated.

If you clean it directly after shooting yeah, just about every spec will come off with a quick wipe down.  Except the crud on the tail end of the bolt that magically appears everytime you shoot and requires a bit of scraping... but even the scraping goes pretty damn fast.

Ha, i should have took some pictures last night... i broke down my rifles and cleaned them after just picking them up and shooting them for the past 3 months... I think i had 3K worth of dirt on the one and around 200 on the other (new build) but they had both been sitting for awhile....

Let me tell you... Fail Zero's EXO coating doesn't keep things from getting dirty... it'll still get plenty dirty.  And if you let it sit itll get caked on and dried.  Ideally you would want to shoot it with brake cleaner or something after it has gotten good and crusty... break things up and dissolve the carbon deposits.

But it'll still run reliably after 3 months of abuse and letting it sit in its own crusty mess with no lube.  And that is the important part... not the cleaning.

It is nice to have freshly cleaned rifles again though

Ive had their bolt in a standard bcg for 2 yrs now in my DI midlength.
I have run the hell out of it putting thousands of rounds down range with only cleaning is wiping down the bcg and bolt.
No lube on the bolt at all. I was so impressed that I put one in my Piston SBR. I have had 1300 rounds in it so far with no lube and no cleaning.
I like to put my weapons to the test with these newer gizmos(piston, failzero) and Im quite impressed I'll vouch for either one any time.

Edit:  I guess i should add that all my rounds have been Wolf ammo.
