I read in a recent gun mag that .308's can have more long term problems. They said Stoner's design was for the 5.56 and isn't quite built for the heavier calibers.

Have any of you had the same problems?

Thanks,

Actually it's the opposite, Eugene Stoner developed the AR platform for the 7.62x51 cartridge.
The people that I know that have them never complained about any failure issues yet(Armalite AR10 and DPMS).

Eugene Stoner of the Armalite company designed the AR platform around the 7.62x51 cartridge before he designed it for the 5.56. I have a recent production AR-10 carbine that so far has not given me any feeding issues using Gen l and Gen ll magazines. A friend has a Rock River Arms LAR-8 308 which uses any metric or standard FAL magazine and it functions with no issues with good magazines. He had one mag that FTF the last round every now and then but that was the magazine, not the firearm. Another friend has a AR-10T and a AR-10 carbine and has no functioning problems.

Wow, you read that in a gun magazine? Their statement obviously has no credibility, since they don't even know that the AR was orignally designed for 7.62x51. I thought everyone knew that. If anything, the opposite is true. When they downsized the design to make it 5.56, they really shrank the bolt and carrier, and there is a really thin area on the bolt around the cam pin. IMO, they went just a little too light there. Even though most bolts will last a lifetime, there have been bolt failures on that area in 5.56 ARs. But I've never seen or heard of one in a 7.62, which are built like a tank.

Which gun magazine? Sounds like a writer is pulling a lot out of their butt. Only systematic failures among quality manufacturers I've read about were the old Bushmaster .308s. Many .308 ars haven't been around long enough to have long term failures have they?

I have had three .308 ARs...  1 Knights Armament SR-25, and now 2 DPMS LR 308s

They have all had the same failure.

The failure to have cheap and plentiful ammunition available.  That is the ONLY failure I have had.

Man, I wish we could go back to the days of 1000 rounds of plinking ammo for 130$ or 1000 rounds of precision for 250$.

AR10 before AR 15!!!

Which gun magazine was this, if they can't use google or wikipedia at least they should be able to count.

Well, wish in one hand, and shit in the other, and see which fills up first.

I quit reading all magazines.  They have to fill those pages every 30 days, whether they have anything to say or not.  I discovered how full of crap magazines are when I was trying to become a better fisherman by using their great advise.  After half of one summer of this I went back to my old ways and immediately was catching more fish.   I started looking at all mags in this new light and have never renewed a mag subscription since.
