Ok, so I'm finally getting around to solving this problem on my AR. I went on a shooting trip about 6 months ago to break in my new AR and I had several Failure to Extracts.

A little info:
I was using cheap PMC ammo 5.56.
Gun:
Del-Ton Lower
JD Machining Upper 16" Fully Assembled by them

Seemed to fire accurately but every so often it would not extract the case and try to load another round in.

That's it...so what's wrong? Could it be a weak extractor spring? or the Cheap Ammo? Thanks in Advance.

weak extractor spring
chipped/broken extractor
dirty chamber
tight chamber

I've never had an issue with that ammo

What color is your extractor spring insert?

I would try the BCM extractor upgrade kit.

If the rifle hasn't been cleaned recently I would recomend cleaning the chamber.

Then if it still doesn't hold onto the brass I'd change out the extractor spring with a gold one from brownells, or a BCM extra power one.
Try just the spring first, and if that doesnt help it might need the o-ring.

I had that same problem using Wolf and Tula steel (after firing several 1000's of rounds of steel without issue) several times this summer. Cleaning and change of ammo did not help.

I ended up going with the BCM upgrade kit and the problems vanished. I should have thought that the ability to reassemble the extractor with just finger/thumb pressure (without much effort) was slightly wrong.....

First thing I would do is clean and inspect.  Then try another ammo.  If problem goes away, its the ammo.  If not its a gassing and or extractor issue.  I like to upgrade to the bcm extractor and it doesn't cost that much.  OK OK you got me, I just like to play with the AR .  The previous post "READ THIS" is good info.

A huge +1 to this. A great upgrade for very little money.

I had a similar problem with my Bushmaster which came with a weak spring and blue insert. Changed to the BCM spring and insert upgrade and all problems went away. Well worth the 5 bucks to have no problems with the cheap ammo

WOW, thanks for all the help.

Riddle me this Batmen I'm using the stock bolt carrier and associated parts and people on here go on and on about chrome BCG and Titanium coated and what not. Mine is stock from JD Machining. Is it worth getting a better BCG. THE ONLY REASON I'M ASKING is I know lots of guns shops offer reliability packages for ARs and I'm wondering what they exactly do. This is a defense weapon so it needs to be reliable. So what are your thoughts?

P.S. I'm a machinist so I'd do any reliability wok myself, just wondered what gunsmiths actually do.

Had this problem with my Colt Match Target when I first started shooting it!  Cleaned the heck out of the chamber- no more pproblem!   On a brand new upper -you should not have an extractor problem! Did you clean it before you shot it for the first time?

+1 again...the BCM uprgade kicks my shells out like a red headed stepchild

ETA: Read your second question and I still say spend the 5 bux then go from there.

Oh yes, I cleaned my rig before firing it, no laziness here.

Thanks for the suggestion. Will do the upgrade and report back. Might be a while or maybe I'll go to the local crap gun range.

Just to be sure, and for clarity, your rifle is chambered to take 5.56, not .223. Correct?

Another vote for this. If it doesn't fix the problem, maybe a tight chamber.

Yes, 5.56 at least that's what the guy who sold it to me said at the gun show. I just checked the barrel it's not stamped anywhere I can see, weird. I just checked my ammo and I was shooting 223 PMC not 5.56, if that makes a difference.

Parts ain't parts.  Get a new extractor and an extractor upgrade kit from Bravo Compnay USA, and I'm willing to bet your problem goes away.
