Just got 1,000 rounds of XM193BK from Spragues and boy is this stuff filthy.

Bag and rounds are covered in a soot like substance. It is like a dust.

Anyone else have this problem?  Should I just wipe all the rounds off with a dry rag?

Picture of my hand after reaching into bag.

Mine came in a sealed bag. Are you saying that dust was inside and out side the bag?

I got a sealed bag also. Dust is only on the inside.

This is a problem with Federal not Sprauges

maybe its ground gunpowder....try snapping your fingers     i always liked them popper things growing up.  I am the bad influence and showed my nephews that if you put it in your mouth and bite it will go bang and light your mouth/cheeks up.

I'll take a look when I get home. I just opened the box to make sure of the contents, I didn't open the bag.

Is that dust or grease?

Looks like gun powder residue to me.

C'mon guy, you gotta do more than just look at the picture.

In the original post I already said that the substance was inside the bag and that it was dust-like in nature.

I love XM193 but I stay away from the 1000 round XM193 bulk packs.

Ammo looks fine.  I just gotta spend like an hour wiping it all down now.

I wrote federal an e-mail about this.

I bought a bulk pack of XM193BK from Cabela's and it did not exhibit this dust.

I moved the the rounds from the original packaging to an ammo can, and then decided to move it to another, so I have had my hands on it, it did not leave this residue.

Is it abrasive or slick to the touch?

Slick like a super fine dust. Extremely fine particles.

Almost looks like charcoal dust from a pencil.

Looks like my hands after I've been reloading.

No big deal.

That's what I'm thinking.  Do they lube the machinery with graphite at ATK (or wherever they're making this stuff now)?

I had the same problem with my XM193 ammo from spragues.  I've just been wiping them down with a rag lightly coated with gun oil.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is not the greatest of ideas?

I didn't want a bunch of oil on my rounds either, so I just put on a pair of gloves and wiped them all down with a dry towel.

You don't want oil on your ammo, it will attract dust and grit.  Ammo should be dry.

Also, when fired, the case ballons and grabs the chamber walls, which is desirable.  You don't want oil and grease.

After the pressure falls off, the case retracts back and is easily extracted.

You don't want oil/grease accumulating in the chamber and baking in there.  That makes for a dirty chamber with a lot of friction.

If you want to clean the cases, toss in the tumbler with clean media for 20 minutes.

Never been into reloading...   How much is a tumbler and what is "clean media"?
