Do I ?
1.) Register my lower and get a 10.5 LMT upper or 2.) Build a LW 14.5+1.5 upper Is it worth all the effort to SBR something? |

I did the exact opposite and got a pinned 14.5 lightweight first, but finally gave in recently and sent off my form 1. It is inevitable, it is going to happen; just accept it and start your paperwork now so you can have a very happy new year. |

While SBR's have a purpose you have to ask yourself do they have a purpose for you. Great for home defense, lightweight, and look totally sick.
14.5 is also a great option still maneuverable, more rail space options (if that is something you need because some need real-estate), less expensive due to no stamp, and no wait. |

Ok, let me throw this out there. Is there a place I can order a new lower AND have it engraved before I pick it up at my FFL? Engraving is not a big deal at all. When you send it out to get engraved, there is no need for an FFL. Ships straight to your house. Engraving is one of the easier steps in the process. ETA : Why not engrave the lower you have now? Engrave it, send out the paperwork, keep shooting in its current configuration. Before you know it the stamp will be back. |

Definitely go the SBR route first. It takes long enough that you might as well get the ball rolling now - don't waste time hemming and hawwing.
You won't regret it. I basically have both of the options you're talking about (11.5 and a pinned 14.5). The 11.5 is worth 3 of the 14.5's to me, in terms of fun factor, shootability, and pride of ownership. Even though the 14.5 is actually about a 1/2 lb lighter, the 11.5 balances so much better that it feels like it weighs less. Until you've gone the shorty route, its hard to describe how much more satisfying they are. On top of that, it's actually more accurate than the 14.5 and I have no trouble hitting stuff with it out to 250 yards. There is little to no downside, other than the ATF wait and slight extra cost/hassle. On top of that, you can always get the 14.5 upper later and use it if you need to travel out state on short notice or want a little extra effective range. |
