Do I ?

1.) Register my lower and get a 10.5 LMT upper

or

2.) Build a LW 14.5+1.5 upper

Is it worth all the effort to SBR something?

1, for sure.  I did the exact opposite and got a pinned 14.5 lightweight first, but finally gave in recently and sent off my form 1.  It is inevitable, it is going to happen; just accept it and start your paperwork now so you can have a very happy new year.

What?   No pie option.

While SBR's have a purpose you have to ask yourself do they have a purpose for you.  Great for home defense, lightweight, and look totally sick.
14.5 is also a great option still maneuverable, more rail space options (if that is something you need because some need real-estate), less expensive due to no stamp, and no wait.

Here is my current AR, as seen in various other threads.

With fixed stock:

With modstock (as of yesterday)

I was thinking about reverting back to the fixed stock for this rifle as it balances the 13" rail better and putting some 4-16x glass on it.

Then I was going to build out another lower and use the collapsible stock and a LW upper for carbine purposes.

Really it comes down to SBR'ing my current rifle or building a LW carbine. I would go for a M4A1-ish build this go around.

SBR'ing my lower is the best thing I've done. It gives me freedom to do whatever the hell I want.

Ok, let me throw this out there.

Is there a place I can order a new lower AND have it engraved before I pick it up at my FFL?

Engraving is not a big deal at all. When you send it out to get engraved, there is no need for an FFL. Ships straight to your house. Engraving is one of the easier steps in the process.

ETA : Why not engrave the lower you have now? Engrave it, send out the paperwork, keep shooting in its current configuration. Before you know it the stamp will be back.

get a SBR if I lived in TN I would

SBR is the only option. (3 of my 10 AR's are SBR's - 10.5" A2 upper, 11.5" flattop with YHM can, and 5.5" .22 w/ AGP Arms side-folder and can under the free float rail).

What part of TN are you from? I'm just outside Nashville.

Nashville area.

From Williamson county, but live in West Nashville at the moment. I'll be moving to Cool Springs within the month.

honestly i want to build one, but currently questioning if its worth the paper work because in my state you can't get silencers and an sbr without one is like a lobster without butter. i hear there loud and loose velocity, but are very handy and maneuverable. i have no access to one and was going to build a pistol but haven't figured out if the pros outweigh the cons and the pistol forum here isn't any help in a solid decision.  i wanted to build an xm177e2 clone. But my 14.5" with pinned hider is an awesome rifle and hard to improve, also a carry handle gun but with mid gas and is my favorite build I've ever done and won't go back to 16" plus.

eta picture: I'm still waiting on the moe handguard with qd cup and will put my tlr-1 light on it also.

Definitely go the SBR route first.  It takes long enough that you might as well get the ball rolling now - don't waste time hemming and hawwing.

You won't regret it.  I basically have both of the options you're talking about (11.5 and a pinned 14.5).  The 11.5 is worth 3 of the 14.5's to me, in terms of fun factor, shootability, and pride of ownership.  Even though the 14.5 is actually about a 1/2 lb lighter, the 11.5 balances so much better that it feels like it weighs less.  Until you've gone the shorty route, its hard to describe how much more satisfying they are.  On top of that, it's actually more accurate than the 14.5 and I have no trouble hitting stuff with it out to 250 yards.  There is little to no downside, other than the ATF wait and slight extra cost/hassle.

On top of that, you can always get the 14.5 upper later and use it if you need to travel out state on short notice or want a little extra effective range.

SBR with 10.5" first
then save up for a 14.5" lightweight upper to swap on/off the SBR for double the win
