Today I experimented on my 10/22 receiver with less than desirable results, the anodizing had a crinkle type finish which caused the model paint to bleed.
The silver write any where pen wasn't much better & didn't give you a whole lot of time to wipe excess away, it also smeared if you did try to wipe any excess away.
The China Doll pen turned out to be a grease pencil that came in 3 colors. (red, blue & yellow) less than desirable for a retro receiver.

So what are you guys using & how do you keep the bleeding of product to a minimum?

I am using a stick of white that came from Smith Enterprises.

Try a lacquer stick from Brownells rub it in good and then wipe away the excess with mineral oil.

I use a #000 brush with Testors enamel model paint. slightly thinned. Takes a steady hand and practice. if I get over-run I wait for it to set 80% or so and scrape/peel with an exacto.

Why not fill in with fingernail polish and then wipe off the excess?

Ok I just have to ask, are you trying to color match some new engraving to the rest of the lower? Or are you trying to contrast color the existing engraving like the guys with them new fangled M4 shooting sticks?

Currently nothing I own has filled engraving, I just remember seeing a pony with some mottled paint in the roll mark & really liked it.
Hence my attempt at filling in the SN & Manufacturer on my 10/22 before doing a lower.

I'm thinking the lower should be easier than the pea shooter, the anodizing is of a higher quality than the 10/22 & shouldn't bleed as much.
