My custom barrel is done, lower is built, and almost all parts for upper are purchased.
I'm pulling my hair out over this last decision.
I have a 18" mid length barrel.

My two choices are;

9" rail with A2 FSB and LMT rear BUIS - maybe Eotech in future
12" rail with low-profile gas block and troy folding sights - maybe scope in future

I shoot targets only, not military or police, just a paper puncher - literally.
I have a pistol and shotgun for home defense.

Any suggestions, comments will be appreciated.

why are you going with the A2 FSB if you are using a flattop lower?

Why not? What if I want to co-witness?

Nothing wrong with a flattop and fixed FSB.

It appears the 9" rail with the LMT rear is the least expensive.  However if you're really going to target shoot, I don't know that an Eotech is your best choice.  The precision of a magnified optic is better for paper punching.

I would recommend you decide which optic you want first, and when you do that your support systems are good to go.  Definitely the fixed FSB/LMT with the Eotech, and definitely the folding iron sights with the scope.

Although more expensive, I'm biased toward the optic route only because I think it is more flexible, especially with a low-powered optic.

if you're building a flattop upper you should use the F-marked flattop FSB not an A2 FSB... the flattop FSB is taller... you can workaround this by putting a taller sight post in an A2 FSB... by why bother if you're building it all from scratch anyhow...

Thanks Hellbound, thought you just meant why put a FSB on a Flattop lower.  Wasn't aware of the different heights.  I'm still learning.

Thanks glock24 for pushing me towards the more expensive purchase. The FSB does not interfer with optics, correct?

Actually the FSB will interfere with optics if they're 3x or less.  That's the best reason for spending the money to get a fold-down front sight.

i've only used red dots on AR's and i don't really notice the FSB unless i actually try to focus on it...

From a purely aesthetic point of view I think that an 18" barrel will look better dressed with a 12" forearm--particularly if its 18" PLUS FH. Gives you a little more sight radius for that Troy FS, too. YMMV.

I was planning on using the new DD 12" Lite if I was going the optics route.
