This journey began on January 2, 2010. I went to the local gun show with my daughter that morning and obviously had too much money in my pocket. My intent was to check out the stripped lower receivers for another AR build since prices have come back to believable.

We stopped at a table that had several brands available for decent prices. Then I saw it, the stripped lower for the DPMS LR-308 for only $279. I started the impulsive thinking on how great it would be to have a larger caliber on the AR platform. We walked around a little more to find other vendors had the same stripped lower for as high as $399. Well that was it, it was such a good price I bought it.

The next job was to sell it to my wife. We have two kids in college on the Mom & Dad scholarship program. I did manage to get her to agree since I received a year-end bonus and should be able to use a part of that for my hobby.

Well here we go. I will list out what I purchased and from who and how much.
All amounts include sales tax, were applicable, and shipping. Items purchased from the DPMS website include shipping in the stated price, so if it says $189, that is what you pay to get it to your door.

My total out of pocket as of today is $2,985.66, which is way more than I initially thought. I did upgrade the trigger and rings. Also I went with the Millett scope to get me started. I have a Millett DMS 1x4 on my AR and I am happy with it.

I did go to the range with it on Sunday to bore sight and check the overall function. No failures to feed or eject. The bolt started to not lock back after about 10 rounds. I checked the little screw-in pin for the bolt catch and it had started to back out some. I tighten this screw up and all was well. A little blue locktite will do wonders. The new trigger feels just like the one on my Rem 700 .270. Really crisp break.

The rifle, once sighted performed well, I was at the 75 yard range and only put 40 rounds down the pipe. 20 rounds Remington factory loads and 20 rounds handloads with some match bullets.

Range I belong to has up to 1,000 yards, so I will spend this summer practicing and extending the distance until either I or the rifle can no longer perform.

I will post pictures when I figure that part out.
