Does anyone have a up close and personal picture of the different firing pin heads?
I need a reference.
Thanks in advance

Excellent question! I would also like to know, I'm in need of a large head 601 pin, and would like some reference.

Ekie posted this pic in the M16 variations guide sticky:

It's the fat heat and the transitional flat head.

Was there anything wrong with the large flat head style such as on the 601?  Why did the head become smaller?

slamfires

Took a couple tries to come up with today's foolproof design.  Wish I had a couple boxes of the early throw aways.  Surprised the 601 pin hasn't been reproduced in quantity but wondering if afraid of potential lawsuits.  One could sure clean up slipping a few of those out from time to time.  Can see some Mexican mfg wizzard tooling up right now and smuggling them across or under the border.

Yeah, used as intended with rounds feeding from the magazine, there isn't a problem.  However, in the Marines on the KD course of fire, unless you are in the rapid fire stages at 200 and 300 meters, every other round is fed into the chamber by hand.  Usual process is with the bolt locked back, toss the next round into the ejection port then let the bolt slam home.  This is where the fat head firing pins had problems.  Without the extra friction of stripping the next round out of the magazine, the bolt would slam, forward and the heavier firing pin had enough momentum to result in an occasional slam fire.  I have a fat head in my 601 clone but I also make sure I'm not using civilian primers and every round is fed out of the magazine.

There was also a variation between the M16 & the SP-1, IIRC someone here had issues with a notched hammer & the M16 firing pin jamming the gun.
The differences between the 2 firing pins was so subtle they needed to be side by side to make the comparison.
