Anyone know what the diameter of the holes in the bcg is for the firing pin retaining pin?  I don't have calipers but on my list.

Just put calipers to two firing pin retaining pins. Got measurements of .086 to .087 inch diameter.
Add a thousandth or two to the hole size to allow for easy insertion of the pin and it may be at around .088 to .090 inch.
Hope this helps.

Are you thinking about using something other than a standard part?

Not at the moment.  Wanted to know because I was going to get a single cupped tip punch to make removing the pin easier and not damage the split end of the pin which I have done in the past.  I did purchase a set of both cupped tip and flat tip punches.

Thanx guys for your help.

I don't understand. Why do you need a punch to get this pin out?

I've had an issue or two with getting firing pin retaining pins out.  When this happens, I usually use a pencil or something similar to pull the head of the pin out.  Pushing the pin out can damage the tips of the pin, and make it harder to put back in.

Sounds like people are still getting bent pins from notched hammers and un-shrouded carriers and/or large flange firing pins. Just take the pin out and it should be straight. If its bent, making it hard to move, you need to fix whatever is causing it. If the pin breaks and the firing pin slips out, the bolt can come apart. This is a remote possibility but not unheard-of.

My M16A2 quit on the firing line of my last qual in 86
when the RO pulled the takedown pin and opened it up
the Firing pin tumbled right out onto the ground, along with
the broken FPRP.

For me the only thing that happened (short of reshooting the last stage)
is that the hammer could not fully release...most likey hitting the side of the firing pin.

Not to say that BAD things could not happen, they just didnt THAT time.

Some FPRPs are just a pain to reinstall.

If you need a hammer & punch to get that bad boy out.....you've got a problem.

Don't need a hammer.  Just wanted a tool that is actually made for split end pins to push it out.

I just use 1/16" punch and pull it out. My wife could easily pull them out with her fingernails.

Use a curved end of a dental pick (carbon scraper) to PULL that sum bitch out.  No punch needed.

Nothing to pull on.  It is a solid pin where the hear is recessed.

Ah yes, the Perma pin that is prone of breaking. Now I understand. Personally, I would get rig of it and use the cotter style pin.
