What year was the transition made from the "flat head" (not 601 "fat head") firing pin to the current improved style? Thanks for any help

Not sure of the exact year, but they were used in the 602's.

Not sure of exact year, but I think there is mention of it in TBR book.I'll take a look after work today and post any info I find.I do believe they were used on the early XM16E1 and early 604s so my guess is up to 1965-66.

from Ekie's Guide:

ArmaLite firing pin on top, current on bottom. Old part caused slam fires, and the new Colt’s design was put into production in 1963:

I thought there were three types...."fat head", "flat head", and the current type. Am I wrong on that?

I think there are modified fat head ones - length of the head is reduced like the newer one, but diameter is the same as the fat one.

Thanks for confirming. Now I'd like to know the years the "light flat head" model was used. I hope m1sniper can find it in his book.

Those middle two were used on prototype or pre-production rifles, right?

no, they were just used as evaluation parts in standard rifles (601's) ...evidently the improved pin was one of the 11 changes to  the original 601 that make up the 602
