I just found out the firing pin on a semi AR15 is different than that for the M16  I was told of this by SMGLee.  I looked up The Black Rifle and it said that ATF wanted Colt to make modifications to the semi pin.  Specialized Armament www.specializedarmament.com lists the semi and M16 firing pins seperately.
I took a semi firing pin and compared it to one that came from my CDNN Colt FA bolt carrier group, and noticed the FA pin has a larger and slightly thicker diameter base (the part that looks like the handguard of a sword).  I can't figure out why they're different though.  They both protrude about the same out of a bolt when pushed all the way inside the bolt.
So would one be able to use a semi firing pin on a full auto bolt/bolt carrier?  What are the functional differences?  TIA

IIRC -the semi auto type hammer with the notch removed will "snag" on the AR pin if the disconnect is removed.

I see, so that's the sole function of the M16 firing pin's larger and thicker base?  If so, then would it be safe to say that one can use a semi firing pin on an M16 bolt/bolt carrier?  Thanks

yes

the m16 firing pin would snag due to the larger dia. but would work if it was installed in a bolt group with a shrouded carrier.

If you have a shrouded carrier, the feature is eliminated, so you can use whatever firing pin you want.  If you have an SP1 style carrier (exposed firing pin) stick with the small diameter pin.  RRA has the correct SP1 diameter pins, even though they sell shrouded bolt carriers, while I've had problems with DPMS pins having too large of a collar even though they only sell exposed pin bolt carriers.  Go figure.
