Hey guys,

I am new to the AR game, I have owned a couple AKs and decided to make the switch.  I was looking to get some advice on an AR at my LGS.  It is a KAC SR-15 E3, I have been drooling over it for awhile now and cannot decide if I wanna dump 2k on it.  Should I look at something else for my first AR? or will the KAC be a good starter?  They have 3 colors right now - a green, greyish/silver and tan/taupe.  Just looking to get some advice before I move forward on a big purchase.

Thanks!

Wow, you don't see a lot of people choose KAC for their first AR.  That's a pretty expensive choice for a rifle platform you may not like.

They make nice stuff.  Not sure I would like the proprietary bolt and parts and it sounds like the rails/barrel are difficult to remove without special tools (but then how often will you need to...).  But a sweet rifle nonetheless.

There are a few threads in the archives on the SR-15:

well if you don't like it you can send it to me.

for 2k you could probably build a better/more customized ar and learn a lot about the platform in the process

I think you would be happy with that if you got it.

if i had 2k to spend on an ar right now i would probably get a psa or mp and an acog.

any ar with a decent optic will blow your aks out of the water.

the beauty of the ar is that it is modular you could start with a very basic rifle and upgrade it to your needs.

consider a larue and an aimpoint

I have an aimpoint T1 already that was mounted to my SGL that I would be using as my optic.

I have been considering a build, the SR15 in store has had my attention but I'm not set in stone on it.  Most of the guys that i shoot with have built their own ARs and said that it was a great learning experience.

I was just looking for the input from some people who have been in the game for awhile.

You really don't see too many people looking at anything in that price range for your first AR.  However, I will guarantee you, you will not be disappointed in it if you buy it.  While I dont own one (yet) I've gotten to shoot the hell outta one a couple times and wow, amazing gun.  Balances perfectly, feels pretty lightweight, accurate as hell.  The lower is about the nicest lower you can buy.  Also comes with a two stage match trigger installed.  I say go for it,  worst case you don't like it the resale on KAC items is going to be really high compared to other brands.

I'd rather a guy come in here wondering about buying a KAC as a first gun ANYDAY over a guy coming in asking about a Olympic or Delton.

STOP !!! – Do not pass go and do not collect $200. You  have AKs - you have already made the correct decision.

If you just feel you have to have a 5.56mm rifle then get an AUG that takes the M16/AR15 magazines.

Also, your money is better spent getting a .308 like the Kel-Tech RFP.

Second thread in the past 10 minutes you've been trolling in, this isn't GD buddy.

No question was asked about an AK, AUG, or RFP.  Take that shit elsewhere.

Back to thread:
I forgot to add that that KAC rifles do use a proprietary bolt design, and spares cost a couple hundred bucks.  If you're a guy who likes to keep spare parts around for your rifles, you should consider that when purchasing.

Nothing wrong with the SR15.  Do it and report back with pics and a range report.

Oh and welcome to the insanity of the BRD

If you are going to drop $2k get a Larue instead

I just bought my first personally owned AR and got a Loki Weapon Systems Billet Patrol Rifle. I have no complaints so far, and have put about 500 rounds through it in the last month. Customer service is amazing and they are very helpful. I had a question about my gas rings not holding the bolt carrier up when standing the BCG on the bolt face (it slowly sank down) and they sent out a brand new set no questions asked.

I spent less than 1,500.00 on the base rifle with backup sights and single point sling plate added.
