| I am looking to build my first AR-15. I would like to be able to use it for hunting (Deer, Antelope) as well as just for leisure at the range. I would like some recommendations on what uppers and lowers to use. I would like to keep it under $1000 if I could, but will listen to what everyones suggestions are. |

Well you could try reading the stickied topics first. Not trying to sound like a dick, but there is a lot of info about the 6.5, 6.8, 7.62 NATO, SOCOM and Beowulf. From there decide how much money you wanna throw and where. All the AR variants have their niche's. Read and find out which one is yours instead of just asking a question because you are too lazy to read |

Wow, building right off the bat with your first post and AR? I'd recommend buying a complete lower and complete upper separately, saves you $75 in taxes, and pin them together to complete your "build." Click thru the sponsor buttons above and on the Industry forum for available options. Go with a 20" 5.56 barrel and 1-7, or 1-8, or 1-9 twist - the lower the number the better covered you'll be with heavier bullet weights. I've got a Bushmaster 1-9 and a Rock River Arms 1-8 upper in 5.56 - neither have made hunting trips yet. Another caliber option would be 7.62x39 - good for deer, easy to find. What state will you be hunting in? Check the regs on minimum bore size before buying! Good Luck. |
| Antelope tells me you're out west and more than likely need a 6mm or better. If you don't reload there are really only 2 choices the 6.8 and the 6.5 Grendel. If you reload you have several choices but because of issues I'd still say the 6.8SPC with a 11" twist WOA or Kotonics barrel until MGI comes out with the "superbolt" |
Welcome to the site ![]() the 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel is a good choice for hunting with an AR there is lots of info on this site to get you started - some other good sites to look at : Ko-tonics Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel Forum for your first AR, buying a complete upper and lower separately and pinning them together is the best way to go |

Thanks for the help guys. Sorry when I said I was going to build one, I did mean just to buy a complete upper and lower and pin them together. I have been looking at the ko-tonics KT68-S4R6 16" upper. I think that the 6.8 SPC is what I am leaning on in terms of caliber. Any more input would be appreciated. Thanks |
