I know very little about specific scopes that are out there, other than I know Leupold scopes are supposed to be very high quality.
I've built an AR 15 in .223 Remington. I would like a variable power scope, with flip up lens covers. And since I'm a college student, my budget is a max of $400. I would like to be accurate out to 800m or so (once I've built up the skill to do it of course). Does any scope really fill that criteria? I've done some searching, but haven't really found one with the flip up lens cover in my price range. That seems like a small thing, but I always lose those on my other guns. If it makes a difference, I'm using a Magpul PRS stock, so I think the height shouldn't be a problem as long as it's not really low. I'm trying to end up with something very similar to this: http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/393670_2587366333390_1531500088_32762555_1741780659_n.jpg |

Look at the Nikon Buckmasters, or similar Nikon scope, I dunno about 800 yard accuracy, but it falls into your price range. Grab a set of Butler Creek Flip covers and you're good to go.

I wasn't aware that flip up lens covers could be added to any scope. I'm trying to figure out what size lens cover I would need for the scope you linked me to. I don't see one that matches 40mm exactly. Would I get the 39.9mm (size 13) cover? |

At the bottom of that page it listed several sets of flip covers... not sure if they are the ones that match that scope though.
I know a chart exists that makes finding the right size simple, but not sure where to find said chart... possibly the Butler Creek website? I would assume that a 39.9mm flip cover would fit a 40mm lens... but don't quote me. ETA: you would buy #17 & #30. when looking at the spec sheet for the Buckmaster you'll see an Objective Bell Diameter: 49.5mm and Ocular Bell Diameter: 42.5mm. http://www.butler-creek.com/productsImages/charts/flip_scope_chart.html link above is to size chart. also, the flip covers at the bottom of the original link ARE the ones you would purchase for that scope. |

I have had good luck with truglo scopes, they are inexpensive but have some nice features you are looking for and have illuminated reticles and a 4-16x50mm can be had for under $200 at webyshops and you can nab a nikon m223 one piece mount and you can have a decent rig for around $250. |
