I am building my first AR-15 and have heard good things about spikes tactical and was thinking about picking up a complete lower from Brownells.  For the upper I was thinking about a Core15 M4A3 upper with a 1 in 9 16" barrel.  Any ideas for me?

I forgot to mention I am building it in 5.56.

what do you want to know?

sounds good to go.  buy it.

Why not put together your own lower ?  That way you will put ALL the parts YOU want on it.  If you start swapping stuff out later, that is just a waste of time and money.

I'm curious if it is universal for takedown/pivot pins to be .250".  I was also looking at a Spkes upper with a 1 in 7 barrel, but the Core15 barrel is chrome lined and I like the sound of that.  Do you have any experience with Core15 products?  Any good?

I was thinking about building my own lower, but I realized I would save money on the parts needed to add on a aftermarket stock when the complete lower comes with it all for a reasonable price.

Not necessarily... you just need to shop around.

The complete lower I am planning on getting is a Spikes Tactical AR-15/M4 chambered in 5.56 for $250 and the complete upper is from Core15 with a 16" chrome lined 1 in 9 barrel for $460.  Those prices don't seem too bad to me.

No, not bad, but you could do the lower for less money if you built it yourself. I don't know what all you're getting with the Spike's complete lower, but you can get a complete build-it-yourself-lower with Magpul MOE hardware from PSA for $139 plus $79 for the stripped lower. Saves you a little bit... $30 or so. Not a huge difference.

Thanks, I'll check out PSA!

Yes, PSA has some GOOD deals.  My only minor issue is that you can't plug and play with the discounted items.  I love the $140 MOE stock (buffer and tube) with PSA LPK.  But, If you want the CTR... there is no way to plug and play.  How about if I want a ACS, PBR, or UBR.  You have to buy the kit and then replace it, or you have to order the LPK separate from the deals that they may or maynot have.  I know they are up and coming and they will have a way to replace sooner rather than later.

I do love PSA...I am a SC boy, so I am all about paying it forward to a SC company.

Checked out PSA, that MOE kit looks great!  Magpul is the way I want to go and this way I will save the money from upgrading later.  And I can get the Spikes Tactical stripped lower with the Punisher symbol engraved on it.

Has anyone had experience with Core15 products?  If so are they good quality?

You might get crap about 1/7 v 1/9 .  Not really a big deal for most people.

I would say you're GTG.  Nice build.

A rep for Core15 has come here touting how good their product is compared to other brands. From the looks of their specs they are just another middle-of-the-road parts assembler. They don't appear to offer anything over the more solid, higher end brands like Spike's, LMT, Colt, PSA, BCM or DD, so I would pass on Core15. This is my opinion based on experience with the other brands I just mentioned. I have no first hand experience with Core15.

The Spike's barrels are also chrome lined.

What dictate which twist to get 1-7 or 1-9 or whatever.  I would like to get an upper for this lower I have been sitting on for quite a while, but I don't know how to determine which twist to get.  TIA

The way I understand it is that a 1 in 7 twist is the round will rotate one in 7 inches and with a 1 in 9 twist the round will rotate once every 9 inches.  I have been told the 1 in 7 is better for heavier grain rounds.  I am not positive on this but it is what I have been told/read about because I am also torn between the two.

1/7 will give you more choice when selecting the grain you want to shoot. Most commercially available low cost rounds these days are 55gr & most 1/7s will shoot that round without issue. If you don't want to shoot the lower grain stuff then you will be able to shoot more higher grains that the 1/9 usually cannot.

Thanks for the info warpig, I may change my upper to the Spikes Tactical M4 carbine or midlength instead.
