Just looking for some advice on....barrel lengths, gas blocks, etc

Just me, but for a first, I'd keep it simple, with a 16.1" M4 type carbine, or 20" M16A4 type.

Add a USGI carry handle from the Equipment Exchange for sights, some ammo, & a few mags.

Take to range & shoot.

Add ons later, as desired.

Thanks for the advice, I kinda want to build one to my liking. The reason being is I don't want to buy one off the shelf or Internet complete because I buy one then I end up swaping triggers or hand guards, etc its like I'm paying twice for things. I'd rather build it once to my liking and be done with it. I want to build this for 2 reasons 1st to familiarize myself to my rifle, and to build something that I like.

Solid ^^^^^.

I built one the way I wanted. Changed parts, built another with new/left over parts. Changed parts, ......
had 7. Sold a couple to some pals, now at 5.

If I did it over, I'd buy a quality first. Put it through it's paces, build off experience there.

Just my 0.02 worth

Edit: Not saying dont build, OP. Just that even with hand selecting  components,  it's doubtful it will be built and never upgraded. That's the beauty of ARs.

Truth be told, minus a stripped lower and delta pack, I've got a full rifles worth of parts sitting here now.

Is that the same as Specops MFG? Do you have any experience with ARs other than youtube videos? Or are you totally new to the platform?

And you're asking for advice, why? :)  Honesty, everyone has their personal likings, thats why we build. Given the lower is the firearm, yes, that is where most start.
Tigwelder hit the nail on the head. You will build one and it wont be long before you either want another or change the one you have. I would push you toward a 16" carbine or midlength with standard front sight and flattop.

My last build and one of my favorites.

Easy to build a solid AR for ~$500.

For another ~$200 you can buy with a warranty.

Your first will likely not be your only.

About $575. I bought it all in pieces, some new, some used. Lower, upper and barrel are all new Bushmaster. Back when Bushmaster lowers were selling for $50. Buttstock assembly and carry handle are used off the EE, BCG is surplus Colt USGI.
