Updated Build Specs:
Here goes, finally to the point I will post pics, albeit they are from a cell and in iffy lighting. Only missing a few finishing details to be complete: "The Punisher" or my "Black and Silver" Build Parts List: Spikes Tactical Punisher Lower - With my own silver color fill. Spikes Tactical Enhanced LPK BAD-ASS Ambi Stainless Safety Selector Magpul "Punisher" Engraved Enhanced Trigger Guard Spikes T2 Buffer Kit Magpul CTR Mil-Spec Stock Spikes Upper Spikes NiB BCG 16" 5.56/.223 1:7 Midlength with A2 Flash hider w FSB 9" Midwest Industries Drop In SS Aimpoint Pro Vortex 3x Magnifier ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have been lurking and soaking up knowledge for a while, but decided to make it official and register. I like the idea of building from scratch to get a solid understanding of how my rifle works. I am still struggling with a few choices and finding the right answer. I have the time and patience (more time than patience) to wait for parts to come back in stock at resonable rates. I feel that parting out will get me exactly what I want while allowing me to wait for resonable prices. For the time being, it will mostly be used for recreation, trying to get out every couple of weeks to shoot. That being said I am aiming at buying some mid-higher quality parts without going to the highest end possible. I have seen the PSA Kit and considered this for my first time build, possibly pairing it with a Spikes Stripped Lower giving me a total of around 680+90 = 770, easily leaving me with some change for some optics, but I am a bit mixed on PSA as a whole when compared to some others? I would like to have the barrel and flash hider already pinned etc on purchase, which lead me towards a complete upper Some of my proposed build is: http://www.shop.doasales.net/Spikes-Tactical-Spider-Spikes-Tactical-Spider.htm]Spikes Tactical Stripped Lower - 89 CMMG Lower Parts Kit - 65 (Debating BCG- Ice Arms Nickel Boron Blem 147, AIM - 119, or PSA - 99) BCM Full Upper 14.5 Mid - 539 Things I would still need: Charging handle Stock Mags Potentially a 7" Troy Drop in Quad Rail Optics Open to suggestions, crituques, opinions etc. I am hoping to do this build "right" so I do not find myself wanting to redo things in a short period of time (unless that is of course a totally different setup/caliber) |

Update:
Made a few tweaks in the build and have the following parts on their way: Spikes Stripped Lower AIMSurplus - 16" Mid Spikes Complete Upper MOE CTR Stock Spikes T2 Buffer Kit (Also adding to the other collection XDM 4.25 .45, Shield 9MM, M&P .22 handgun) To Be Found: Searching for a Spikes Enhanced LPK still A few 30rd Magpul Mags For Future Phases: Magpul Angled Foregrip (Purchased) BADASS Stainless Ambi Safety Switch |

Are you married to the Spike's LPK? PSA frequently has LPK + Pmag deals and noone ever seems to have anything bad to say about their LPKs. Not married to it, a few perks to it have been the ergo grip, branded guard, and upgraded trigger. I assume at some point that would be something I would want to upgrade from the PSA kit, I suppose it depends on what that deal comes back at with the PMAGS etc. Thanks for the suggestion! |

PSA also regularly has deals with their LPK and upgraded triggers, some even Giselle. |

Update: Made a few tweaks in the build and have the following parts on their way: Spikes Stripped Lower AIMSurplus - 16" Mid Spikes Complete Upper CTR Stock Spikes T2 Buffer Kit Spikes Enhanced LPK Magpul BUIS Front and Rears To Be Found: A few 30rd Magpul Mags For Future Phases: Magpul Angled Foregrip (Purchased) BADASS Stainless Ambi Safety Switch Spikes NiB BCG As I have the front BUIS ordered, it will sit until I get my rail figured out. Anyone have some input on this section: I think I will need: New Rail to replace the Magpul Handguard - Looking for something similar in length to the current handguard/block/sight (Would that be around 9 or 10"?) Open to suggestions... I had thought of the Spikes (to keep the theme going, but will listen to suggestions) Low Profile gas block - Spikes or Troy, (Seeing they way the current setup works, I seem to remember reading something about needing an extension to cover both ports?) Optics... still trying to determine what I want to do here... Vortex Strikefire, Aimpoint, Eotech, who knows. As far as build, I am goign to order a set of Lyman punches/hammer today, what else should I be looking at specifically? |
| I have a build with the Spike's enhanced LPK. If you can get it at a "normal" price or a bit of a discount, it may worth it if you need all the upgrades. Getting an LPK, ambi safety, upgraded trigger, KNS pins, and billet trigger guard adds up pretty quickly a la carte. If you over pay at all, may be better to check out one of the WOA or PSA upgraded kits. The ergo grip is nice but I ended up swapping out for a Grip 21 anyway. |

Alright time for another question, As it is, everything is in the mail to give me a fully operational build.
Looking into sights. With the Standard Front Sight on this upper (F Stamped) I should be able to immediately use the Magpul BUIS simply by installing them and it should be sighted in properly right? Nothing additional needed. I am still researching what I want to do to replace the handguards, had thought quad rails, but may look into the troy alpha possibly. Also reading lots up on optics... yikes, a quick way to increase the cost! Even the mounts are spendy little things. |

Sights will line up correctly (MBUS and standard F stamped front sight base), but you will still need to sight it in at the range. Functionally, it will work fine. For the hand guard, since you bought a fixed front sight base equipped upper, why change that? You can add a different guard (rail) without removing the front sight. Look for drop in rail systems. Some of the more popular ones are from Midwest Industries, Daniel Defense and Troy Industries. I just changed my MOE hand guard to a drop in Midwest Industries model (they offer a couple of options, I chose this one). Couldn't be happier with it. Some of the positives are super light weight, continuous rail up top, very tight lock up (no wobble at all) and 4 QD rotation limited mounts for push button sling swivels. Looks great too. If you go this route, be sure to look for a "Drop In" type installation. No tools required, no messing with removing a stubborn FSB that is pinned on. If you have a carbine length gas system, you buy a carbine length hand guard. There are Drop In Free Float models available if you feel you need Free Float, for my latest build I didn't feel it nec. (My next build is going Free Float with a low profile gas block, but I purposely bought the last one with the standard FSB/gas block). |

Oh, forgot to address optics. One of the best buys in a real (as in to be taken seriously, used on real world working weapons) red dot sights is the Aimpoint PRO. It comes with a mount, sells from a hair over $400 down to about $360 ish on sale. I have one (as well as more expensive options), It is probably the best buy in the world of serious AR optics.
PRO stands for Patrol Rifle Optic, they were designed primarily with Law Enforcement Carbines in mind. I can state that they are used in the field by the security force of at least one nuclear power plant in the US (dozens of carbines there outfitted with them). I like mine a lot. |

I replaced a standard hand guard with the MI G2 mentioned above and I love it. Found it at a LGS for less than online. Getting the delta ring to cooperate was a bit of a pain, but it all worked out in the end. Check out Primarty Arms for optics. They have a nice selection and their PA branded optics are very inexpensive. Good luck on your build, from your parts list it sounds like it will make a nice stick. |

Thanks much for the response.!
In the big picture, I was not a huge fan of the Front Sight and had envisioned replacing. You are making me rethink that now though! (Asthetically I like the lines without the front sight) I will do some digging on the drop ins... that seems like an easier solution if I can adapt to the front sight. (Planned on doing BUIS front as well on a free float) It is a mid length rifle, so it looks like the 9" would be the proper one. At quick glance, the Troy Battle Rail Delta seems to be a nice option, allowing rail segments where you want them. |
| If you keep the FSP, I'd reccomend a good quality folding rear BUIS. I like the Troy, but there are others. It's a little more than the Magpul, but I'd consider the Troy + FSP to be more than just "backup" quality. My buddy has that exact setup and it works fantastic. I run an Aimpoint clone + Magpul BUIS front and rear. The magpuls are fine as a backup set. |

I mounted the Vortex Mount backwards from the instructions, is there any concerns doing it this way? I prefer to have it flip to the right side rather than the left. Should I be worried about ejects hitting it? Outside of the way it will operate via pushing the button (pulling it back in this case) Now to get to the range and sight it in. http://jvanistri.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/20130903_1307441-1024x768.jpg http://jvanistri.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/20130903_1307561-1024x768.jpg http://jvanistri.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/20130903_1309021-1024x768.jpg http://jvanistri.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/20130903_1310011-1024x768.jpg http://jvanistri.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/20130903_1312121-1024x768.jpg |
