So I went in looking for my first AR on a $600.00 budget. I know, pretty low, but I decided on the PSA 16" Freedom Carbine because everything I read about it (including posts on AR15.com) said PSA makes near-Colt and near-BCM quality rifles at a super affordable price. So that's the one I was going to buy. But as of recently, my budget has increased to $800.00. Should I seek out a different rifle with my new budget or would I be hard pressed to find better quality than the PSA at an $800.00 price range? This is my first AR, so I have to factor in things like ammo, a case, mags, cleaning equipment, etc.. Thanks for the advice guys

If it was me, if I had $800 for an AR, I would get a Colt for just a tad more.  Or, another option is one of BCM's uppers (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Standard-16-Mid-Length-Upper-Centurion-COSMO-p/bcm-urg-mid-16-c4-12-cos.htm), get a decent lower here, add a BCG and CH.  These BCM 'blem' uppers are freakin' steals right now.  For just a bit more you have a ton of options, or right now you are very close to a Colt.  Not knocking PSA; I just prefer others.

Ditto on the above post and would also suggest a complete Spikes for $800

This.

More specifically... THIS

Bad news is that you have to wait a while. But it's worth it.

Get the PSA and use the rest to buy additional magazines and ammo.

Here is my PSA Dissipator

My truck gun is a PSA with a eotech. I think it is a fine weapon. I certainly have had no problems

Of course my play gun I built. could probably buy 3 like my truck gun for what I have spent

It sure is fun to build and shoot your own gun.

but it is a never ending thing.

I now have enough spare parts and tools to get a real good start on another one

the cost never ends. been trying to buy one of the Forster b-3 presses and midway just notified they were in stock. Spent a grand today on getting set up for reloading and can't even buy powder yet.

seems powder is as scarce as .22 bullets. I know where to get them both though. Premium prices on Gunbroker and Armslist

Just placed my order, actually. Thanks guys, I'm going with the PSA. Now it's time to start saving up for the Colt 6920.

You were almost there. Good luck though!

Haha I knew someone would point out that I'm only 200-300 off from a Colt. The thing is, I'm just one of those types of people that likes to start things a certain way... I wanted to spend $550.00 on an AR that I could learn everything about, all of its parts, all of its functions, learn it inside and out before I went and spent $1000.00 on an AR, like the Colt, that I had no understanding of. But again, thanks guys, this forum has been so much help

Buy the PSA

then

Build your next one. Lots of fun, you will learn a lot and you will get a lot of satisfaction from shooting the one you built..

I never had an AR until I bought the PSA. Fun to shoot and gave me the fever.

The gun is really simple. Anyone with a little mechanical ability and common sense should have no problem putting one together

and you can build a better one than that idolized colt.

Also keep Windham in mind. My AR's are Colt's and Wilson Combat uppers on LMT lowers but I have played with Windham's and would be happy to own one. They are well built rifles.

PSA has a chrome hammer forged upper and the barrel is made by FN for $300 on sale.  The have complete lowers on sale for around $200 and their premium bolt runs around $100.  So for $500 you can get an excellent rifle and spend the extra $200 on ammo or red dot.

Which PSA did you go with? You mentioned the Freedom. They do not have the FN chrome lined bbl. like the PSA premium line does. The Freedom product line is relatively new. There hasn't been very much customer feedback on them yet. I'm sure it will be fine and if not PSA will likely take care of any problems.

Agree 100%

Take a good look at Windham Weaponry.

I have one for over a year...I have ran it hard. Very happy with it. It's been 100% reliable and very accurate.

I went with the 16" 1/7 Midlength Freedom Carbine. It's as entry-level as it gets, but PSA has a good rep so I'm really trusting that. But hey what about this build. For 10 bucks more I can get the Premium chrome-lined barrel. Is this a complete rifle?

PSA Premium BCG

PSA Blem. Lower

PSA Magpul MOE LBK

PSA Blem. Premium Upper

My only concern is that the premium upper won't be on sale tomorrow. I don't know if PSA's 'Daily Deals' last LITERALLY 1 day. But otherwise is that a nice build?

Nothing wrong with buying cheap and then buying better later. Some people will spend $300 on a custom made knife when a $50 would suit their purpose just as well.

So you placed the order, and are getting a second one as a build?

Right on.

Haha no I cancelled immediately! I struggle with commitment, and buying my first AR is KILLING me. I'm thinking about building a PSA with Premium parts for $20 more. The parts are in my above post ^^

Get the premium one, prices are at an all time low right now.  I have had a premium mid-length for almost 2 years and it has not had any issues, it has fed all ammo I've tried with it and no FTE or FTFs.  It's pretty damn accurate too. Are you wanting carbine or mid-length gas?
