Hello,
I am in the market for my first AR.  Very excited.   Been following your site for a while now.  Local gun shop carries mostly Bushmaster, which, after reading about all of the manufactures, does not sound like too poor a choice.  The insite from the rest of you that I am looking for is what style or 'set-up' of AR do you prefer and why?   I am hoping to eventually own more than one, but starting w/ a versatile, multi-purpose set-up would probably make the most sense.  In my gut I am leaning toward a M-4 type, but wondering about its accuracy comparied to 20" models.  Can anyone shed some light on this for me?   How much do you give away @ 200 yrs. 14.5" plus-FH comparied to 20"?  What are the preferences on A2/A3 uppers?
TIA, and sorry post long.

WELCOME to the site!

read around and try the seach engine up top.......

as to your questions:

depends on what you want to use your AR for--defence? plinking? competition?

as for me, a 16in HBAR BUSHMASTER fits the bill for most of my uses--compact enought for cqb/defence, yet maintains good ballistics and bullet velocity out past 150 yrds
still accurate enough to past 200 yrds for me too

some say accuracy has NOTHING to do w/ bbl length--i say that for the 5.56/.223 cartrige and most any other bullet, the more bbl there is to burn out the power and provid the faster velocity the less time the bullet takes to reach the target and the less time it is to be affected by wind and crap

i would go w/ either the 16 or 20 in bbl

get the A3 as its better for optics mounting

Well, it appears that I have more time to ponder my decision, as the bushy I was leaning toward was sold.  ALPHAGHOST, thanks for the oricle link, I had not  seen it.  How much cheaper would you consider a 'post'-ban AR to be a good deal,  instead of ordering a new one set-up the way I want?  Post ban model had 14.5 w/ perm. attached ak style brake and fixed M-4 style stock.

TIA

you'll see a post-ban model 2 or 3 hundred less. It's really worth the extra to get a no-ban model.

Boss-444,

If you are looking for an M4, don't buy the AWB model unless you are getting a huge break in price.  The AK style brake is horrid, and the nonadjustable stock will run you $75+ to swap out.  To get a real flash suppressor put on will run you another $60-100.

If you are getting the 20" rifle, you still have the FS to deal with, but the stock stays the same.

To get back to your original question, the M4 is certainly a more flexible weapon platform, and makes a great general purpose weapon.  200 yard shots are certainly well within its capabilities.
