I've finally saved up a decent chunk of money for an AR, and I'm in the research stage of this process. I'm looking to spend about $1300.

Intended uses:
Target Practice
Home defense
WROL weapon (because I'm paranoid)
Hobby (I tinker, so options are good)

So, what I'm looking at so far are these:
Del-Ton Evolution
BCM Recce 16
DPMS 3G2
DDM4V7 (probably out of my price range)

So, I'm not entirely sure if these are what I really need since I'm new to this, so what are your recommendations?

(On a side note, my e-mail was through Lavabit... which is now gone. Are we still anti-Gmail here or can I change my e-mail to gmail account?)

Has building an AR been an idea of yours? They are super-simple to assemble, as long as, you have some mechanical ability.

As for your e-mail address; once you have created an account, you can go into your settings and switch your e-mail address.

I thought about building one, but I think I'd like to hold someone else accountable for any problems that occur with the first AR I get. I wholeheartedly intend on building another down the road, though.

(Thanks for the info on the e-mail. Didn't know the policy on that)

I'm getting a DD v7 soon, you can get one for $1300. If not look at the BCM over DPMS and Del-Ton.

The BCM is on par with the DD quality/reputation wise, however BCM rifles are quite rare given demand and their backlog.

You may be more satisfied if you don't spend the entire amount on the rifle and save some for a good optic like an Aimpoint Pro or a basic EOtech.
Also some deals don't include iron sights which generally run $100-$200.

Just something to consider.

If you go BCM you might just have some money left over for an optic, or accessories (BUIS, mags, etc) or some ammo. Also, you would not be sacrificing at all on quality and BCM customer service will take care of you.

Of the ones you listed, go with the Daniel Defense or the BCM. The DPMS and Del-Ton are not even in the same league.

If you can scrounge up 1450, Western Sports has the v7 with Aimpoint Pro.  Thats a screaming deal.

Thought about trying to score a Spikes rifle?  Save some coin and get mags and ammo.

really depending on where you plan to buy the AR you can get a pretty good one for $1300... assuming that things like an optic and such aren't included in that price. Now honestly I am not completely aware of where the market for ARs is right now, if prices aren't inflated then $1300 should be about enough to get you something like a lower end Colt, or a Daniel Defense. Being your first AR I would honestly suggest trying to find a Colt for that price... there is nothing particularly fancy about them but they are usually pretty rock solid and standard in a way that will be good for you to learn about the platform in general.

Also, in going with a simple standard model it is a very good starting point for possibly upgrading or adding on to in the future if you ever want to put more money into it.

As others have mentioned, if you can muster the will and courage to go ahead and build a custom AR then not only can you easily get a great rifle for your budget but you can learn A LOT about the platform as well. It might seem like a difficult and complicated task but honestly the only hard part about a custom build is deciding on which parts you are going to use. Every time I go to buy more AR components I find tons of new information and/or new models that make it very difficult to decide on which particular model would be the best to buy.

While a great rifle, and good price considering the MSRP. $1300+ and NO SIGHTS?

You may simply have to buy a rifle to find out what you don't know.
When the ban sunsetted, I snagged a Colt HBar; it was a decent rifle (tho' too heavy, all things considered).
With it, I experimented with barrel weight, triggers and sights; it eventually morphed into an A1 clone until my NoDak lower showed up.
Then I traded it away; gotta believe that a Colt will bring you a better deal on a trade than about anything else.  There may be better brands out there, but a gunshop knows full well that customers will go for the Prancing Pony.

In any case, think about the Colt, but get something and get started.  Too much time can be wasted on a 'perfect' rifle when you haven't had enough experience to know exactly what 'perfect' looks like; only what we experts here tell you!

Of those listed....definitely BCM (check out Rainier Arms for your lower) have ADCO put in a ACT trigger if they have one

Order your upper off of BCM main site

Go 16" or 14.5 mid gassed light wt (you can add a BCM bolt carrier group and gunfighter charging handle get the MOD4 (medium) and have them
pin your muzzle device of choice (get a GI birdcage) -if you can wait BCM will be adding a very light keymod KM13 forend to their lineup-

Get your self a red dot scope down the line Aimpoint pro or Micro 2moa a decent mount Larue or Bobro
a ship load of ammo and Pmags later on get yourself a good light and a sling.

DD would be my choice.  Great rifles and great customer service should you ever need it.

I am just now finishing up my first build, on my first AR, on my first semi-automatic weapon, and I gotta tell ya as someone with minimal / non-existent mechanical expertise... it ain't hard at all.  You need literally no tools aside from a pair of channel locks, some masking tape, and a long handled allen wrench.  I was worried that I'd screw something up, but because of the design, the only way you can break the gun is if you break a part during the installation.  It seems like everything goes in correctly or not at all.  The only tricky part is putting in the detents since you're pretty much loading a tiny little spring loaded gun when you install them.  Even the buffer tube is ridiculously simple, and that's an area where you have 2 detents being installed more or less simultaneously.  Hell, I had more trouble putting the bolt back in on my pre-fab stag upper than I had assembling my lower.

Ok, so I'm starting to drill down on the things I'd like to have on this AR. The $1300 is before optics, but having iron sights is highly preferred. I'll work on getting optics once my fundamentals are up to par. I don't want to be too dependant on optics this early on.

I'm pretty confident I'd like a rail out of the box,  otherwise it will end up costing me extra down the road. I'll be adding a flashlight for home protection and possibly a foregrip if it seems necessary.

One thing I'm torn on is the barrel. I don't know whether to save weight or go for durability/accuracy. The deal posted above looks good, but it's a lightweight barrel.

So far it sounds like DD and BCM are the top picks. Can someone explain how they are better than the Del-Ton?

Thank you guys for helping me, I didn't expect so many people to respond so quickly!

Don't let the light wt fool ya....just as accurate and durable and a heck of a lot easier to carry around or maneuver with inside your house or get out of vehicle with...
Given your stated needs concerns a light wt will do you just fine.

Do you have a link for that?  I couldn't find it on their website.

If that is true, it is indeed a screaming good deal.  Just sounds too good to be true.

I was in your same shoes. I've been sitting back for a couple years, and finally decided to pull the trigger on an M&P 15T...which comes with a lifetime warranty at a great price. Lots of magazine and online reviewers claim it shoots better than an entry level gun, and can even have some of your upper line models playing catch up in an area or two. Look into them. Lots of online praise for the price. You would even have a couple hundred left over for attachéments, or a sling, or mag, ammo, etc.

Spikes, BCM, DD, PSA, S&W ect ect all make good stuff.

Don't over think it to much. If $1300 is your total budget I'd get a $800-$900 and buy 10 Pmags, and 500 rounds of ammo (at least).

For awhile I got hung up on a mil spec gun with tons of crap hanging off it. I still have a "tacticool" rifle, but I've found myself shooting the m&p sport I picked up more and more.

I looked at Spikes first, but the wait time is up to a YEAR! I'm not even sure if I'll be in this neck of the woods by the time it shows up.

So, the weight difference between the LW and Gov barrels on the DD seem to be 3.2oz. If I can find it for the same price, should I just go ahead and get the gov barrel?

Also, Forgive my ignorance, but can someone lay out why BCM and DD are better rifles than the Del-Ton & DPMS? The latter  2 have a better stock and grip and come with sights and a 2-stage trigger. I know the specs don't tell the whole story, so I'm trying to figure out why they aren't recommended.

The $1300 is set aside just for the rifle, and I'm going to go ahead and include the irons into that price point. I can wiggle a little, but unless that DD is on sale like the link above then it's too much, considering those Samson flip ups are going for $165 on top of it. I can always get ammo and mags as I go, so that isn't a factor at the moment.

You can go with a pair for Magpul flip up sights for less then $100 bucks. If you need a few more weeks to save up for the DD do it. You're better off buying  from 1 of the better quality companies like DD or BCM so you'll have higher quality equipment.

DD makes high quality rifles. You can't go wrong with a DD . I paid $1350 for my DDM4 V7LW, if you find 1 for about that price buy it. I decided to go with the LW (light weight) version .
Stock DDM4 V7LW

After I finished upgrading & modding

List of the parts added:
-Geissele SSA Trigger
-Head Down Raptor Ambi Charging Handle
-Magpul STR Butt Stock OD green
-Magpul Extended Butt Pad
-Magpul Trigger Guard OD green
-Magpul AFG OD green
-Magpul PMag's OD green
-Ergo Grip OD green
-Aimpoint PRO
-Primary Arms 3x magnifier on a
-Larue LT755-30S mount
-LaserLyte K15 Green laser with mounted pressure switch
-Surefire Fury EAG on a

I love taking this AR to the range, can't wait until this weekend .
You will be very happy with a DD

So, I'm still weighing my options here. Can someone tell me the internal differences of the DTI Evolution vs the DDM4V7? I know the barrel twist is different (DTI has 1:9, DD has 1:7). From what I've seen the 1:9 can shoot a wider range of round than the 1:7. However, Daniel Defense, Spikes Tactical, BCM, etc. all use the 1:7 twist.

Also, the DTI has a 2-stage trigger vs... whatever the others have because it isn't listed.

Any information helps. I'm a measure twice, cut once kind of person, so I don't want to get something and realize something better was available.
10/13/2013 2:03:37 PM EDT
[#32]
Here: http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=493

Scroll down to the twist section (right after chamber section). The 5.56 is a ~neutrally stable round, so faster twist rates (1:7) are required to stabilize heavier bullets (68, 75gr, etc). If you want to shoot long distances or bigger tasty things (deer, etc) you should use the heavier bullets and thus need a 1:7 or 1:8 twist rifling.

As for the rest of your questions, I'm on my iphone and this mobile thing sucks, so someone else can handle that stuff.
