I am going to build my first AR. I have owned one before and used one in the USMC so I am fairly familiar with them. I am looking for opinions, and thoughts on what I am thinking of doing. I just bought a RRA complete lower from a friend of the family. "New never shot" I do not know if I wont to by a complete upper, or if I wont to build one. I am also having a hard time deciding between a 16" and 18", most likely 1 and 8" twist upper. I do believe that I am going to go with a mid length gas system regardless of barrel length. Any thoughts or experience very welcome hear! At first I am going with standard FS and standard hand guards, then when I save more money I will upgrade to a FFT, and BUIS. I also am wondering about bolt assembly. Should I stick with a standard assembly or would I be better suited with a chrome bolt assembly. Thanks in advance for your help and recommendations! Boz |

I think the first thing you need to do is ask yourself , what am I going to do with this rifle. A shooter, a varminter, are you going to put optic s or gear on it. M4gery's are hard to beat IMHO. There are many fine companies here that will help you find what you need. |

Well I would go 18 inch bbl as you can almost have the best of both worlds. I would recommend you build BUT you will hate me later because you're certain to catch THE BUG. As for the chrome bolt carrier I wouldn't bother - the military dropped the chrome stuff. There are some companies that make high performance bolt carriers, but it really makes almost no difference. Remember to shop carefully and avoid junk. You'll just have to buy quality later and you'll have wasted money. Good luck Pete |

The middie gas system is a good choice for the 16" build, it is quite noticable how smoother running that set up is than a carbine gas system. The 16" - 18" barrel choice, I prefer the 16" handy length, acceptable ballisitics. THe Bolt Carrier Group does not need to be chromed, just make certain you purchase one that is assembled and staked poperly. |
