I am planning out my first AR build and would like some input on choosing parts.
1. Will a DPMS upper and Lower be good as far a quality is concerned? 2. I'm looking at 20" barrels, are there any real draw backs to using this length? 3. Any general advice for a newbie? 4. Any parts that are a good idea to put extra $ into from the get go? 5. Haven't read anything negative but, I'm looking at Magpul MOE stock and PMAG's any drawbacks? |

There are alot of them out there, they must have some worth!! 2. I'm looking at 20" barrels, are there any real draw backs to using this length? The only drawback is the long length, and weight. But they shoot smooth, and the added length adds some pressure for better fps. 3. Any general advice for a newbie? Build what you like! Don't always take the negative comments on these threads as gospel... 4. Any parts that are a good idea to put extra $ into from the get go? Loaded question! It depends on your usage. Mil-Spec is usually better than Commercial quality. 5. Haven't read anything negative but, I'm looking at Magpul MOE stock and PMAG's any drawbacks? Magpul has great products, although their fanboys go overboard at times... I've got the ACS and love it! |

I am planning out my first AR build and would like some input on choosing parts. 1. Will a DPMS upper and Lower be good as far a quality is concerned? Friends don't let friends buy DPMS. Look at which rifles have issues come up more frequently. I'd stick to Colt, LMT, BCM, Noveske, Sabre Defence, Daniels Defence, Larue, or roll your own using good parts from the above. 2. I'm looking at 20" barrels, are there any real draw backs to using this length? Weight and length as said above. 3. Any general advice for a newbie? Do your homework. Don't buy what looks cool and don't go cheap. Read these forums in depth before buying. Spend more now up front. You get what you pay for. All AR-15's aren't made equal. 4. Any parts that are a good idea to put extra $ into from the get go? Get good optics. Don't buy a $1200 Colt 6920 and then stick a cheap BSA or NcStar optic on top. Save your money for an Aimpoint, Eotech, ACOG, or something that will last and be effective. Surf the Equipment Exchange for used optics if you need to save some money. But don't buy shitty optics for your nice rifle. 5. Haven't read anything negative but, I'm looking at Magpul MOE stock and PMAG's any drawbacks? None. But If you like the MOE stock, I would bump up to the CTR. The locking device it has is worth the extra coin. Generally, newbies come here and ask these same questions over and over. Then similar advice is provided like I just gave you. Then it is generally ignored, and people buy what they figure is a "good bargain" in terms of cheap parts anyway. These are the same people who show up asking why their rifle is a giant POS. You have been warned. |
