I bought my first AR about a month ago at my local gun store. It was a really good deal, so I wasn't going to pass it up. Its quickly became an addiction, and Ive spent more money than I probably should have, but its all worth it to me. My current mods are:

DPMS AR-15
Troy Low Profile Gas Block
Global Military Carbine Length Quad Rail
GG&G Mad Flip up Rear W/Locking Detent
Midwest Industries Flip Up Front Sight (Handguard Mounted)
Vortex Sparc 2 MOA Red Dot Scope
Troy Ambidextrous Bolt Release
1000 Round of Ammo

I'm going to build my next one. I wanted to have an off the shelf one first so I would have something to reference in the future. What do you guys think?

A friend of mine gave me some older magazines that the military gave him. They were all scratched up, so i cleaned them, taped off where the magazine went into the mag well, and i coated them in 3m rubberized coating. It worked out really well.

Hmmm... might want to invest the $20 in a Pmag.  #1 I didn't think the military was allowed to give out stuff like that.  #2 if they were, if they were getting rid of it, it is in really bad shape as far as functionality.  Congrats on the rifle and welcome.

Personally, I would go with a longer rail. Your sight radius for the BUIS is tiny. You'd be able to stretch that front one out a little further with a longer rail. Plus, you can cover up the gas block and some more of the barrel.

The mags work great, but they were scratched from hell and back. I'm not a huge fan of polymer mags, but i do know pmags work great, so i may invest in some.

There are rails that use the standard barrel nut, so you wouldn't have to remove it.  See Rainier Arms Evolution, Samson Evolution (both are made by Samson Mfg, slightly different design), Troy Alpha or even Fortis Rev.  The Rainier and Fortis are my favorite of that bunch.

If you want more of a standard looking quad rail you could also go with the Centurion Arms C4.  One of the sturdiest quad rails I've ever used and uses the stock barrel nut to boot.  Welcome.

You don't have to if you get a rail that utilizes the delta ring assembly.  Daniel Defense makes the Omega rail (not the Omega X) and it installs right into your delta ring, while giving you a continuous top rail.

Since you already have the low pro gas block, you might as well do it.  Otherwise, I would go back to the standard front sight block as that looks sort of odd.  I would suggest at least a 12" rail (14 would be nice).

Nice build! I like the longer rail as well. I run a Troy Alpha on my 10.5 duty SBR. Never had a problem with it and it's been banged around a lot!

It's really just my personal preference. I've seen torture tests with all the polymer mags, and they seem to hold up incredibly well. I'll buy some, but I don't know if they will be my "go to" magazine. Thanks again for all the responses. Im now looking for a fortis rev for a decent price. Time to save up some more money!

You can get one that bolts to the factory barrel nut.  I wouldn't suggest removing the factory and re-torquing... i don't think they are quite the same after they have been installed and un-installed.  You can dremel off the delta ring and corresponding spring... you aready have a low profile block so you can just attach the rail directly to the barrel nut and you are g2g.  A new rail would be good.

Yea... you can get one with the proprietary barrel nut.  Since this is your first AR you might want to enlist the help of someone who has done it before.  I torque my barrel nut down to about 70-75 lbs.  Also, make sure you put anti-seize on the threads prior to installing the barrel nut.

What I was saying though was that you can avoid having to take the barrel nut off all together buy getting a rail (such as the centurion c4) that clamps to the original barrel nut.  Rather than removing the barrel nut to take off the delta ring, you can get a dremel and cut the delta ring off.  That way, the barrel nut never has to get taken off... which takes a vice and receiver block which I doubt you have considering this is your first AR.

Staked, yes, I looked at that when i bought the firearm because I had seen many things on here about it. If its MIM or cast, i have no idea. Why do you ask?

Well, as everyone suggested i went with a longer rail, also free float. I went with a nordic components 12.5" free float tube, and I couldnt be happier. I also did all the work myself, which i am actually proud about because I wasnt looking forward to removing the barrel nut! Here is the result! What do you guys think?

Welcome to Arfcom :)  BTW I just picked up one of those Vortex Sparc reddots, and I was very surprised at just how good it is. Glass is crystal clear, and it seems to be very well made.  As for mag refinishing, I forgot where, but there is a whole thread on here on how to get the original look back to them. I sand blast my old ones that are beat up, and then coat them with some Perma Slik G (you will have to order it online) and they are like new. I rebuilt a ton of them during the ban and always re-coated them.   Another vote for getting some Pmags as well. You will soon learn that when it comes to ARs there is no such thing as "too many mags" or "too much ammo" lol

If you have a 2 piece free-float rail, you usually cut the delta ring off with a dremel. Sounds bad but its pretty easy if you take your time. That's what I had to do with my Troy and it is pretty damn solid. Works for me and my requirements anyway.
