I am new to AR's and rifles in general, but I am ready to tackle building my first one. I have done some research on here as well as other sources but I know very little about the platform. I started getting into handguns first and now I am here...ive had an itch for some time now! The main purpose for the AR is self defense and range. I am not looking for match grade, but would prefer quality over quantity any day.

Here is what I have purchased so far...

-Spikes Lower
-CMMG LPK
-Spikes st-t2
-Magpul UBR stock
-Magpul moe grip

I assembled everything last week and Im ready to get the rest of the parts now...

I have $1200 to play with to finish the build. I have been doing a lot of research on barrels, uppers, rails, BCG and all other parts necessary to finish the AR. My head is spinning from the information overload and I would love to hear some suggestions on what you guys(and gals) would recommend.

I know this question has probably been asked a million times, so I apologize in advance for the redundancy.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a great start.  What do you plan on using this build for? Oops sorry I just caught your use.  My 2 cents would be find a good complete upper and optic.  Leave some budget for ammo.  AIM or PSA as well as several others carry nice uppers, focus on a good barrel.

Go to Primary Arms or check AIM one of them has a good sale for complete spikes upper. Like $500 I think. Or less.
AIM with MOE $520
Primary Arms $475

Either one will do, great deals.

Both PI and AIM are good to deal with, but in this case I'd go with the PI offering... $40 cheaper and comes with nicer handguard:)

Do you want to build your upper or buy one complete?

I don't have the necessary tools to build an upper. If I did I would get a Noveske barrel with a free float rail like the NSR or a Samson Evolution, but they are kinda pricey. Or a Daniel Defense barrel.
Also 14.5  or 16??

I like this Spike's one.

What else do I need from the description to complete the build. Not including optics/sights ect.

Looks to me the only thing you need to complete that upper you listed is Ammo and Optics. Oh and some time to shoot the piss out of it

Just got my conformation email for the spike's upper. Thanks for the help.

What optics and iron sights would you recommend? What do you run on yours.

I'm posting pics later of what I built so far.

Thanks again!

Depends on your budget really.

On a budget, PA micro and Magpul MBUS. I have PRI flip ups on mine along with an aimpoint ML3. If I had the $$$, I'd try an aimpoint T-1.

I am basically in the same boat.  I am thinking of just running a budget red dot for now and save up for nicer glass and BUIS down the road a bit.  But I may buy some Mbus sites they can be had for $70 shipped on the EE.

Since you got a spikes upper on the way, Why don't you go with the new spikes folding BUIS? Just continue with the spikes theme. It will make for better resale down the road. And stop buying! This stuff is addicting!

Good idea! I highly doubt I will sell it, but then again I have never built one so i don't know yet. I found these... Spikes Billet Sights that are pricey but i like the look as well as the reviews. Thanks...I am already addicted, c-c-c-cant s-s-stop b-b-buying!!!!!
Here is a few pics of what I have so far. The Magpul stock i nott in these pics, had to send it back for a replacement.
