Hi all, new guy here. I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to sign up. I'm planning on building my first AR for my "over the winter" project and would like your input. A little about me, avid hunter, shooter, outdoorsy guy, I was active duty Marine corps infantry from 08-12 so I'm comfortable with the platform but I've never built one myself.
Uses: I plan on using this gun for a bit of everything but mainly coyote hunting, then home/personal defense as a close second and possibly some 3 gun down the road someday someday. So here is my parts list. I did quite a bit of research into all of it but again I am no expert so help me out if you see something that's off. YHM stripped upper YHM forged lower JBO lower parts kit Timney competition drop-in trigger 3# Anderson Mil spec buffer kit Hogue Mil spec overmold stock Hogue overmold beavertail pistol grip Lothar-Walther 16" .223 Wylde match grade barrel with matched/headspaced BCG YHM low profile gas block(pinch screw) YHM Phantom compensator/flash hider BCM gunfighter charging handle, short latch Midwest industries Gen 2 SS free float handguards 15" well there it is, let me know what you think. Thanks! |
| This is a hard one to answer. You have done your homework, and it looks like everything will work. Mostly what you need is an opinion, and you know how that goes. Being that you are familiar with these weapons, if you think this is what you want, then go for it. Where are you located in VT? If you run into issues, let me know, I would be happy to help you out. Semper Fi, Brother. |

Looks like a fantastic build. I've got the CMC trigger in my 3 gun rifle and I like it very much. Other components look to be very good quality.
However, if you're looking at 'yote hunting and potentially 3 gun, why the collapsible stock? It'll work, but a true rifle stock will give you a smoother shooting rifle as well as one less thing that could potentially be in the wrong setting when it is "go" time. Most (I said most, not all) 3 gun shooters run longer barrels and rifle stocks to give them a smoother recoil impulse. I'm building a 16" rifle now, but I opted for a slightly longer (intermediate) gas system over the midlength system just to try to smooth it out a bit. I'm also going with a plain old ordinary Magpul MOE Rifle stock because it fits me. Anyway, good luck with your build. Regardless of the small tradeoffs it's going to be a great rifle! |

Upper and lower you could probably go with a different brand to save cost.
The same could be said about the barrel and BCG, but as you have a mix of uses the match barrel may be needed. I much prefer fixed stocks. I have an A2 on one rifle and a Type D (Pre-A1) on another. Both are very simple and inexpensive, but there are several other options in either length and even in the short "entry" length. If you have any questions about the Midwest Industries SS G2 handguards let me know. I have that exact model on my 18" SPR-ish AR and I love it. |

Quoted:
Why wouldn't I want a 3# Timney trigger in a HD weapon? Is that just personal preference? It's generally recommended that any HD/combat rifle should have a trigger that's more in the 5+ lb range, which is why even aftermarket HD/Combat type triggers tend to be heavier than 3 lbs. A competition trigger has a light trigger pull and a short reset. During the stress of a HD shooting or a combat situation, you don't want to accidentally touch off a round into/through a wall or fire more shots than you intended. You have no idea how you're going to respond to that type of stress and having a mouse-click of a trigger pull could potentially lead to an AD. |
