It does slow the cycle speed of the action a bit(not enough to notice with a semi), but the main reason it reduces felt recoil is by delaying the unlocking of the bolt. This allows the gas pressure to drop a little further before the bolt carrier begins its rearward movement. Since the gas pressure is lower, the bolt carrier doesn't slam into the back of the buffer tube as hard. The lower speed of the bolt carrier also makes it easier for the extractor claw to hold onto the fired case. |
