So I've been reading the AR15 forums for about a month or so while trying to decide which brand and model of AR I was going to purchase, while I have learned quite a bit I still don't really know wtf to buy. I know that I want an RRA AR, but I'm not sure which model to buy. I'm pretty set on getting a CAR with a chome lined barrel, but other than that I'm completely lost. The Tactical Car A4, Elite Car A4, Entry Tactical, Tactical Car UTE2 and Elite Car UTE2 seem very similar, I'm hoping to either put an EoTech M512/551 or an Aimpoint Comp ML2/M2. What is the best rifle to buy if planning on using either of those optics, and would I be able to mount the Aimpoint 3xMag on all of them. So I know this is probably already a ridiculous post but what are the advantages/disadvantages of an R-4 length handguard and a midlength one? Any help is much appreciated.

Welcome aboard!!

I would first-off advise that you order a lower through your local FFL, and then purchase the upper you finally decide on separately.  You can get a LEO/MIL discount from LMT, if you want a CAR gas system and a flattop upper for mounting optics.  Furthermore, LMT has more of the "desirable" features than most other non-custom manufacturers.  By going this route, you'll save money and get better features (as you won't be paying the FET on a new complete firearm).

The differences between some of the RRA rifles you mention are in the length of the handguards (CAR-length vs. Mid-length) which also changes the length of the gas system.  A longer gas system softens the action stroke, reduces some of the wear-and-tear on the gun, and gives you the proper length of barrel in front of the FSB to mount a bayonet (should you choose to do so).

Also, the RRA's either come with what appear to be either heavy barrels and some with lighter M4 Government profiles (the so-called "R4" barrels).  The RRA's are also all 1/9" twist, meaning that they can't be reliably used for bullets heavier than about 69gr.  A more desirable twist is the military standard 1/7" twist that can stabilize every .224" bullet available.

HTH!

What do you want your Ar to do is it for Self defense, hunting, plinking, target shooting?

After you answer that question then pick the rifle most suited for th job at hand.

I would say I want it for shooting moving targets or shooting while moving from 25-70 yards and shooting stationary targets 100-150 yards.

Buy any type lower ya want Most are about the same.

Then Buy a LMT upper and be Done with it!

I like the 14.5 uppers Then add a Phantom

I have a Eotech 551 on my LMT M4 14.5 with a Bushmaster lower

My MAIN GO TO is a LMT DEFENDER 2000 14.5 M4 with Aimpoint ML2 plus EXTRAS

The aimpoint ML2 is WAY BETTER than my 551 eotech

My 551 has gone down 3 times in less than 2 years
Pull out to find batts dead

My ML2 is 7 years old and never stops runnig

Thanks for the advice everyone, after talking with Pete at Legal-Transfers I decided to go with an RRA elite car chrome lined barrel and a few extras for my first AR he said I'd probably end up happier with a complete rifle instead of an LMT upper and a RRA lower. Picking it up tomorrow : )
