After lurking for awhile I deicided to make a account. Anyways my first firearm I own is a AR-15 I am building. I bought a stag arms completed lower with a collapsing buttstock, and recently purchased a DSA upper for 275. Had to get a friend to pick up the lower from the FFL because I am only 20, but once the upper comes in, I will have it transfered to me as a completed rifle. Im thinking of buying a .22lr bolt first due to cost of ammo and I think it will build better shooting habits in the long run to start with .22lr. Any reccomendations on rear sights?

Geeze, even in NJ you can buy a long gun at 18.  Who's crying now?

As for a rear sight if you go the 22LR conversion, pretty much any will do since the 1/9 twist of the DSA upper will not be optimal for 22LR accuracy.  Just plan aheads towards the optics you want to use later down the road.  If you plan on going with an ACOG or other magnified optic, you will need a low profile flip-up (preferably one that locks into place).  If your desire is a reflex or holographic type of optic either the flip-up or fixed will do.  Some have even tried a detachble carry handle.....hmmmm.

Thanks! Appearently theres a new law for receivers since you could theorically build a AR pistol or SBR. I have a M4 airsoft rifle that I used for plinking and in simulations that has a folding rear sight on it, It is pretty good quality, I wonder if I could detach that and use it with .22LR. I dont think I would trust it once I start running 5.56/.223 though, at that point I will invest in a quality rear sight. As for the optics, I am thinking somewhere on the lines of a red dot or 4x sight. I am not too worried about the accuracy with the .22LR, since I am only using it to help with proper shooting technique while working on acceptable groupings, and since the closest range is indoors and only 30 yards long, its not too much of a issue.

PLEASE don't put airsoft parts on a real rifle.

Well the sights on it are not airsoft parts, I picked them up at a gun show. There not the best quality, but they were designed for firearms, not airsoft.

Agreed.

Sounds like you should hit up the OH hometown forum and make some friends there. Go shooting with some local arfcommer's. That way you can check out some of their rigs and get some sage advice on what and more importantly what not to waste your money on.

From a self confessed AR newb to a newer newb, thats sounds like a damn good plan all around. I'd suggest a .22 coversion such as the CMMG from CDNN Sports (169.99 + plus they also threw in a great folding knife and
a Simmons red dot free). Learning to shoot with irons first and educating your trigger finger is a lot easier with less noise and recoil of a .22. Just remember, front sight, front sight, front sight...

Welcome to the world bud.  Absolutely go with the .22 conversion, Mine is from Spikes tactical and its awesome.  Cheap and fun to shoot, (and my girlfriend loves shooting it which is an even bigger bonus.)
Sounds like a nice gun cant wait to see it.

An optic I really like is the Millett dms-1. It is pretty cheap, it goes for around $200 over at SWFA, and of relatively good quality. BTW, if you didn't already know this, it is a 1x4 variable illuminated optic. I ran it for about a year on my 6.8 with great success. I ended up selling it though and replaced it with a Trijicon accupoint.

If you are looking for a red dot instead of a variable or fixed power, I would suggest gettng an aimpoint or something similar. Mine works great on my 5.56. I got it and the QRP mount for about $500 even a a local store. If that is a little out of your price range, they make one that midwayusa.com sells for a very resonable price. I believe it is the Aimpoint Comp C3, but I could be mistake.

My only advice is don't go too cheap on the accessories you buy. I found that if something is cheap in price, it will more than likely be cheap in quality. In the long run you will end up spending more money trying to replace it.
