Hello All,

I am a new member and have only really read on the retro forum here.  Have been into m14/m1a's for awhile but recently got an itch for retro ar's.
Thanks to all for the great posts that I have read here.  Lots of great information and I credit this forum for teaching me about RETRO!

The pics are of my first build.  I got the upper off GB. I believe it was a Coast Guard gun.  Lower came from Nodak.  I used a sanding block on it and then finished with 0000 Steel wool.  I have a national match trigger in the lower.

I originally decided to take on the project in memory of my cousin John Krebs Second Lt.  Died in June of 1979 in Quang Tin Province.  I have started to collect a lot of things from that era from M1 helmet to a 1969 Zippo to a period Ontario Machete.
Since I built this, I have also ordered and received a great kit from Henderson Defense.  I cannot say enough good things about the crew there.  The kit is in perfect shape, dare I say "unfired", also got some FAL mags on their prebuy and am very pleased.

Thanks to all for a great Forum.
Aloha
Jason

First off, welcome! Second, great work, because that rifle looks excellent! The wear on the lower looks awesome, and I love the slightly purple tint.

Very cool. I too have recently come from the world of FALs to retro ARs, on my second. Seems to be some cross contamination of the retro disease.

kids, only on your 2nd.

Welcome and I hope your wife doesnt miss you too much. You will seem to spend a lot of time here.
Only 2 small things I spotted in your post, the 1979 in Quang Tin and the selector on your lower is a tick mark.
We didnt have those when I was in the Marines in 79.

Other than that, it is a great first rifle.

Nice build!  These first builds are getting better and better.  I guess gun things in HI must be better now than when I was growing up there.

Thanks for all your reply's.  I am starting my Henderson Kit and waiting on another Nodak Spud Lower. Next one will be  more "new looking" since the kit came in such great shape.

One typo.  Cousin was KIA in June 1970.  Not 1979.  Coming up on 40 years.

Selector came off my Stag Arms M4.  It was grey and matched better than the one I have for this build.

I'll be at the range next week and take some pictures.

Range is Ukumehame Firing Range on Maui.  Cu you there.

Here's my first "retro" build from circa 1983 or so.  It's all Pre-Ban (in case that ever comes back).

Essential Arms receiver doesn't exactly match the mag fence, but the colors match nicely.  The upper is pure Colt M16A1 (chrome bore) but with an XM16E1 flash suppressor.

Now that the No Dak's are available I may replace this with one without the mag fence.
