Today I took my new Chrony F-1 chronograph to the range and measured the velocities of a few rounds through a few rifles. More data will come as I get the chance to gather and process it, but here is the first installment. I also have this in spreadsheet format with more specific information about the firearms, averages, and standard deviations. That spreadsheet can be found here.
I had a very limited number of rounds for some of these tests, so some trials have fewer shots fired than others. If you want me to test something else common and inexpensive, feel free to contact me. If you want me to test something hard-to-find or expensive, contact me and send some. I do intend to try more calibers, firearms, and loadings, as well as revisit some that I have measured here. All velocities are in feet per second (FPS). The chronograph was positioned about 3 yards from the muzzle of the firearms. | The thing I found most interesting was the nearly statistically insignificant difference between the velocities of the M193 through the 14.5" and 18" barrels. Is this to be expected? At least from my test, it seems that the 55gr. ammo reaches peak efficiency somewhere around 16" of barrel, and won't get much faster. This will require further testing. |

You need a larger sample size to make this determination. What's your P-value? I know this, hence saying that this will require further testing. I don't know how to calculate that. I'm not a statistician, and if you want to find fault with my use of "statistically insignificant" just pretend I said "very small difference." |
