Just joined the forum and wanted to say hi.  I just got my first AR-15 at the Gun Show in Gettysburg, PA on Saturday 8/30.  Since I'm from Maryland, I only had 4 to choose from, and my brother who lives in PA, helped me pick it out.  It is a Fulton Armory FAR15 and the person who owned it previously had already upgraded it with a ton of MagPul components.  I have had a Glock 17 for about 20 years and have just gotten back into shooting as my daughters are old enough to join me.  Actually my oldest, who is a senior in high school loves to shoot and my youngest, who is a sophomore has not shown that much interest.

I will upload a picture of my gun, once I figure out if I'm allowed.

Read the tutorial, so here it goes:  (The Scope and Voodoo Tactical bags where separate)

I'll probably be learning more than teaching at this point as I'm just getting familiar, but I did want to introduce myself.

I am looking to buy some ammo for target shooting, so if anyone wants to point me to the best places, It would be appreciated.  If not, I'm sure there are lots of threads on ammo and I will uncover the favorites soon.

Thanks,

Jeff

Nice rifle OP. Add a TLR-1s to make it night time capable... (In Georgia it's night time 11.5 hours a day now); so it's not a bad idea if this is your home defense rifle. My wife has became really interested in shooting the AR and is really good at 50 yards in closer. Good for you for getting your girls into shooting and defending themselves. Lots of shit bags out there... Empowering the women we love is a very solid thing sir!!!

Thanks for the kind words.  I definitely want my girls to feel comfortable and be confident around guns.  Not like they will ever get the chance to carry as we live in MD, but they can still learn to shoot and eventually own.

I will probably keep to the Glock as my primary home defense weapon, but I will be looking to get the TLR-1s, as the rail mount has already been added.  The scope I got, does have a green laser, so I would have that as a back-up for sighting at home-defense ranges until I can pick one of the lights up.

Nice score and welcome to the forums..I have three daughters myself and it can get really expensive when I take them all shooting but, I look at it as an investment for when they finally leave the house and are living on their own.

The two places I look for deals on ammo are the websites below. They let you know who has what and for what price per round..I've stumbled on some pretty good deals overall.

Welcome aboard.  Always good to have another aficionado.

Check the EE for ammo, some great deals there for range and self defense ammo.

Thanks for the great links for Ammo.  Any recommendation between 223 or 5.56?  My brother bought me 3 boxes of 5.56 ammo as a "Congrats on your first AR15" present.  Prices seem pretty close for both rounds so it may not matter, but I thought I would see what members suggest.

Thanks,

Jeff

5.56 is higher pressure. If your barrel is marked 556 you can shoot both.

Yes, it is marked for both, so I was just curious if there was a preference from the group when both can be used.

Thanks,

If you look at Palmetto State Armory website you can find 1000 rounds of M193 5.56 for $300.

Nice rifle OP! I prefer 5.56. M855 and XM193. But if you stumble across .223 for a good deal, snatch it up as well!

I've always had good results using American Eagle .223, Federal XM193, PMC Bronze, Independence, and Fiocchi all being 55gr FMJ. I probably have shot well over 80K collectively of the ammo mentioned and could count on both hands the malfunctions that were ammo related, PMC Bronze being possibly the main one.

That's not a knock on PMC as a whole cause it's treated me well but, there was one batch where I had about 6 rounds of the 1K case that failed to fire.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I just put in an order for 500 FEDERAL AMMO 5.56MM METAL CASE BT XM193.  Worked out to be almost 36c once shipping was figured in.

I'll do better with future orders, but wanted to get something in the mail tonight.
