Just built my first AR but all I have are horrible cell phone pictures so will try to post tomorrow when the sun comes up.
Upper Receiver: Aero Precision COP mid-length Ranier Arms Raptor charging handle WMD NiBX M16 BCG AR Performance SOCOM mid-length melonite .223 Wylde 16" Melonited mid-length gas tube Geissele Super Gas Block (set screws and pinned) AAC .30 cal suppressor mount / brake (still waiting on this) - barrel is threaded 5/8 x 24 Troy BUIS (Dioptic rear - HK front) EOTECH EXPS-2 Inforce WML Lower Receiver: Spikes spider lower Magpul STR BCM MIL SPEC buffer tube / castle nut / QD end plate Springco blue spring Spikes T2 buffer DPMS LPK KNS Gen 2 Mod 2 pins ALG ACT Magpul enhanced aluminum trigger guard Magpul B.A.D. B.A.D. ambi selector switch BCM MOD 3 grip I purchased tools from Brownells and Midway USA. I also purchased, and returned, an ATI MIL SPEC buffer tube kit because the end plate was damaged and the castle nut had notches on one side only (no way to stake the nut). I got the ATI kit from Stutts Tactical Supply and thought I'd have to eat the cost because after closely reviewing the picture, it clearly shows notches on only one side (for the wrench). So I wrote a review complaining about it and Steve from Stutts Tactical emailed me and after a couple more emails and a trip to the USPS (return shipping on their dime) I had a $54 credit back on my card. Awesome service from those guys and I will definitely check them out if when I build my next rifle. I also purchased a Magpul A.S.A.P. that won't fit on my Spike's lower. Purchased it because it was Magpul and then read the *awesome* reviews it received. I critically looked the A.S.A.P. over and decided the reviews were spot on and it stays on my bench. I much prefer the properly-fitting BCM QD endplate. My 10 year old daughter said "I call first shot!" and now wants me to build her one; I think I'll make her build the next one with me. This rifle is lighter than my POF P-415 (circa 2009) and the rail is MUCH smaller in diameter, making it much easier to drive. My POF now wears a Nikon M223 3x12x42 SF and a Harris bipod, and donated its EOTECH to the cause. |

From first post:
Didn't get a better one today because we took it out to test fire and it was a single shot AR. Brought it back to the house and pulled the gas tube and it's blocked 1 5/8 in. from the BCG end. Got some cement-like stuff out of it using 12ga. copper wire. It comes out like mud and it dries hard and the color of dental cement. I had another mid-length tube and the 12ga. copper wire easily slid into it up to the bend. Changed the tube and now it cycles like a semi-automatic. **EDIT** Here is a better photo: http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a592/ranger51r/DSCN1866_zpsd99792e0.jpg |

Not sure what's wrong with the B.A.D. but it appears to fit and work properly. At least it did when we test fired it.
The ACT feels pretty nice and has a wide, flat trigger. Fairly smooth pull and I prefer the wider, flatter, trigger over the one on my wife's Oly Arms. My POF P-415 feels pretty similar in that it has a wider and flatter trigger than standard and I've gotten used to it. Update on the blocked gas block. I purchased it from Custom AR-15 Sales and had an email back within an hour to send it back for a replacement. I hope to get it in the mail tomorrow. I have the less-severe-angle BCM grip on my POF and I like it a lot. I no longer deploy and have to carry a carbine every day but the limited use it now sees (a day on the range doing multiple stages with some local LEO) it feels pretty good. The MOD 3 is about $15 or so and it doesn't feel any worse than a MIAD in the hand but not as good as some of the softer grips. Again, I haven't spent all day every day with the gun. |
