Thanks to the info on this site(mostly) I was able to lessen my n00bness levels by a factor of 1 AR build and I wanted to share the results!
So, here are the parts: from JD Machine Tech I have: The lower and upper receiver, 12" cylindrical free float hand guard, low profile gas block, charging handle, bolt carrier group, and a picatinny rail. From our friends at magpul I have: Trigger guard, grip, and CTR stock. For the trigger, I have: Rock River Arms 2 stage national match trigger KNS Precision mod 2 gen 2 trigger pins (anti-rotation) For the buffer tube and lower parts kit, I have brand X gun show pot luck. For the barrel I have a daniel defense 16" chrome lined CHF barrel w/ 1:7 twist The barrel is topped off w/ brownell's tactical flash supperssor, w/ "pain compliance" tip(lol!!!) For iron sights I have Troy tritium folding BUIS All told, I'm in for just under $1700, not including the assorted extra bits you buy when you get your first AR. I wasn't sure if I'd build it myself at first, but I ended up doing it. The hardest part was the JD hand guard / barrel nut. It's different than the standard, and it took a while to figure out.Was actually pretty easy other than that. I did say it's complete, but there's a few more things left to do of course... Coming soon: a magpul angled fore-grip, and some kind of optic(red dot..eotech, scope??...dunno yet..need to researcht that a bit.) Didn't get a chance to shoot it yet though. I'm using a laser bore site that looks like a cartridge & I'm a bit concerned about how far off the dot is. I can't seem to lower the forward sight enough to match it, it seems, and it's over to the right a bit. Wonder if it's cause there's drama w/ my rail/handguard/sight alignment. And now, some pics. http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s504/tuxedoonatshirt/P1040173.jpg http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s504/tuxedoonatshirt/P1040176.jpg http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s504/tuxedoonatshirt/P1040178.jpg http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s504/tuxedoonatshirt/P1040171.jpg http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s504/tuxedoonatshirt/P1040170.jpg |

Thanks! re: the weight, I just weighed it.... 8.1 pounds w/out a mag in it. is that heavy? i've seen 16" AR's with optics, lights, and loaded mags that weigh 8.1# that's a little on the heavy side especially even more so for a smooth free float tube what kind of attachment system does it use? It looks similar to some of the YHM/MI setups which are also on the heavier side. |

I guess I'm ok w/ the weight.. If I was going for lightweight, I probably would have made some different choices. Maybe some plastic or carbon something or other parts. Guess I don't know.
This link has some pics of the jd machine parts for attaching the barrel/rail that perhaps(?) are adding to the weight.. Link w/ jd machine parts sample photos An not familiar w/ YHM stuff to compare it.. On a side note, that guy was building a .308 pistol ar.. That's nuts!(But I kinda like it) |
