So im starting my first build (more like modification of my existing bushmaster) and had a very few specific questions i wanted to ask. I started a new topic just because every new build is different and what one guy wants/is planning i may not be and that thread my not address my particular need(so please dont kill me for starting a new topic). I have a bushmaster patrolman's carbine with the detachable carry handle. The plan for this build is to make it my "if i only had time to grab one rifle this would be it" rifle. I do plan on a shorty from scratch later but not just yet , id rather walk first run after. the parts list i have so far is the following
1) TA44S-10 - low magnification , no batteries optic. 2) mako recoil reducing stock with the cheek riser ( since im mounting the acog on my carry handle) 3) Free float rails (suggestions welcome ) 4) grip pod 5) fail zero bolt carrier ( a luxury more than anything since i plan on properly lubing my baby any ways) 6 some sort of flash light. 7)Mako mag well grip 8) Gas buster charging handle. 9) noveske switch block ( again another luxury i dont need it but feel free to chime in) 10) some sort of upgraded sights but i dont know what kind of options ill have since im keeping the carry handle so i may not have any? 11) spikes tactical heavy buffer the lower/upper are gonna stay the same being as they are brand new and are of good quality and brand new , i think my next build will be mega/spikes. i would like to swap the barrel for a medium contour cmmg 14.5 inch barrel mainly because i want the 1:7 twist just in case i start buying heavier grain ammo and if i add a suppressor ive heard that on a lighter profile barrel the POI can change when i throw the can on there. Any thought on this? advice of any sort would be appreciated and i apologize in advance for my newbiness. thank you !! |

I would suggest a VLTOR Imod. or an EMOD. not really a fan of the Mako stocks. 3) Free float rails (suggestions welcome ) - Customizable rail system... I like the Troy VTAC Extreme.. VLTOR CASV, and Samson EVO 4) grip pod - not a fan of vertical grips myself... i prefer handstops.. and those grip pods are HUGE. 5) fail zero bolt carrier ( a luxury more than anything since i plan on properly lubing my baby any ways) - love it. 6 some sort of flash light. 7)Mako mag well grip - I like the Sixell Never quit grips 8) Gas buster charging handle. - BCM gunfighter all the way 9) noveske switch block ( again another luxury i dont need it but feel free to chime in) 10) some sort of upgraded sights but i dont know what kind of options ill have since im keeping the carry handle so i may not have any? - night sight front post. Also shop the EE for alot of your stuff... great deals to be had there. |

1) TA44S-10 - low magnification , no batteries optic.(Trijicon Accu Point 1-4x24)
2) mako recoil reducing stock with the cheek riser ( since im mounting the acog on my carry handle) 3) Free float rails (suggestions welcome ) (Daniel Defense) 4) grip pod 5) fail zero bolt carrier ( a luxury more than anything since i plan on properly lubing my baby any ways) (Great BCG BIG Price / Can save money and get a great BCG at a lower price) 6 some sort of flash light. (Surefire) 7)Mako mag well grip 8) Gas buster charging handle. 9) noveske switch block ( again another luxury i dont need it but feel free to chime in) 10) some sort of upgraded sights but i dont know what kind of options ill have since im keeping the carry handle so i may not have any? (Diamondhead front and rear / Ditch Carry Handle use a sling / Magpul MS2 and ASAP) 11) spikes tactical heavy buffer Personally I prefer Magpul over Mako but thats just me. Looking at the list you have put together I would recommend buying a couple more parts and build the gun you want the first time (Spikes upper and lower and DD LPK). By no way an expert just thowing out my .02. Good luck and remember to take your time and enjoy the build. |
| Thanks for the help! i was looking at some of the customizable rail systems but i was a little apprehensive about them. i was wondering how secure they are vs a standard rail system ? ill look up the vltor stock again i think there was a reason i didnt like it but im not sure. and il take your point about the grip pod into consideration , the fact that it doubles as a bi pod was the real plus for me. i may wait till the next gun show so i can handle one before i plop the money down on it. god forbid i buy it and it isnt what i need. |

I thought about that but since i have a completed rifle already that i got a great deal on ($679) thought it would be a good crash course just to mod this one. my next one will be from the ground up. what surefire were you thinking ? i think i looked at the scout model and i was considering going that route. I will, thank you very much! when i get done ill be sure to post pictures. |

properly installed any of the rail systems i mentioned is just as secure as any quad rail system. okay cool ill start looking into them now , which one(s) do you use ? I use the VLTOR CASV-M system and the Troy VTAC Extreme. Supremely happy with both... i was debating between the vtac extreme and the samson evo rails... was about to get the samson rails but i got a great deal on the vtac so i went that way instead. |
