So I stared my first build, (and all from parts no pre-assembled upper our lower. ) I finished the lower and most of the upper, I got my new BCG and charging handle. Now I need to put the barrel on during the weekend when I have the time and access to vise etc.. so far so good. Here's where I went wrong and hopefully this will help someone else not make the same mistake. After putting the upper together (with barrel NOT installed) i figured this would be a good time to cycle the weapon for function. Do not do this without the barrel because it will cause damage to the charging handle and you'll have to buy a new charging handle.

Quoted: I have quickly found that getting snap ring pliers are worth there weight in gold for getting the delta ring together. For installing the barrel some say you have to use antiseize others say any good grease will do any thoughts? Use a moly grease, which you can get at most auto parts stores. Moly - molybdenum disulfide. |

And don't clean your rifle, put it back together (minus the buffer & spring), and then cock it, either. Your BCG is going to shoot into the buffer tube and you'll be removing the castle nut and unscrewing the tube to get it out. I mean, that's what I heard. ![]() There really needs to be a "like" button on here! |

Well just look at it this way its a good time to upgrade to the raptor charging handle And they are on-sale now: Primary Arms - $69.99 Use coupon code: RAPTORMAN |

Either the Raptor or the BCM, these are fantastic handles. As for the anti seize any decent auto parts store will have very small amounts in pouches in something like a fishbowl near the counter for under $1, or a whole tube for around $5, we aren't talking about 24K gold paste here. |

Glad you didn't hurt the gas key or the rest of the BCG. |

I don't see the damage. Have you though about free floating it, or are you going the traditional route? |

I don't see the damage. Have you though about free floating it, or are you going the traditional route? It's funny you mentioned that. As it turns out I thought I ordered a barrel with a rifle length gas port. I haven't touched the barrel for 2 months and now that I'm ready to install it I realized I order carbine gas port by mistake. I already have a non float rifle length hand gaurd so I'm going use a second dummy gas block on the front hand guard cap. The functional gas block is a low profile so it should fit under the hand guard no problem. |

| Here's another one, before assembling my upper I degreased it with brake cleaner, then wiped it down with 98% alcohol. I painted it with Brownell's Aluma Hyde II, I applied the speckle coat and then 2 solid mid coates at 15 mins interval. For more protection I put on a 3rd coat, big mistake was I didn't cover the take down or pivot holes. The pins wouldn't fit when mated up to the lower, I had to use sandpaper to clear the holes. Suggestion, place a piece of dowel or rolled up card through the holes to keep the paint out. |

I would think that because there is no barrel with its extension in place, the bolt carrier group just wants to keep going under recoil spring tension, with only a small tab in front of the charging handle that the gas key goes through to stop it. ...maybe? That was my thought. |

Quoted:
Glad you didn't hurt the gas key or the rest of the BCG. The gas key and the charging handle don't interact. There's a flat milled into the top front of the BCG. The charging handle bears against the lip created by that flat. As for the BCG being damaged, it's made of 8620 steel, the charging handle is 7075 aluminum. The BCG isn't what's going to get damaged. |
