Hey guys. I've been lurking on this forum now for quite a while and finally started my first build. Kind of a plain jane build but enjoy the pics.......
RRA lower M&A LPK CAA grips, stock, carry handle Bushmaster upper receiver DTI 1/9 16" barrel No name flash hider F stamped FSB M&A BCG http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/bkirk87/ar15164.jpg http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/bkirk87/ar15165.jpg http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/bkirk87/ar15166.jpg http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/bkirk87/ar15167.jpg http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/bkirk87/ar15168.jpg http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/bkirk87/ar15169.jpg http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/bkirk87/ar15170.jpg I have a few questions for you guys also: 1. What is the bestmethod for pinning the front sight? 2. Any tutorials on assembling a bolt and carrier? 3. I still need to get handguards. I am looking at a FF tube with no rails. Any suggestions? Thanks for looking and i appreciate your help. |
| Not necessarily machine shop tools. I have a drill press if that counts. I am well aware of the possibility of ruining my barrel. But I think the benefit of being your own gunsmith far outweighs the risk. If this is something that is impossible to do myself then I will have no problem taking it to a gunsmith. Thanks again for your help. |

Yes, being your own gunsmith is neat. I like building my own stuff too. But this is a relatively minor step, compared to attaching the barrel extension and drilling the gas port. It's not as if you carved the receivers yourself. I just don't feel comfortable advising someone how to do this over the internet. |
|
haha I understand where you are coming from. You are right, but I want to do as much of this myself as I can. And from outward appearance, this does not appear to be an impossible task. No I am not milling my own receiver out of stock, but I feel I should learn how to do this, as it is a very critical step inproducing a fairly accurate rifle. I ordered my taper pins from PK tonight, so I guess I will jump head first into this when they arrive. Whether a success or failure, I will report the rusults. I appreciate your advice and look forward to further discussions as I dig myself deeper and deeper with my AR |

Am I missing something or don't most FSB usually have two pin-holes?
Where's your gas tube? Re: smooth free-float handguards: - VTAC / JP Enterprises https://www.jprifles.com/1.4.4_hg.php - Or, you could check out the offerings from YHM, about halfway down the page, and then another model a bit further down: http://yankeehillmachine.com/store/forearms.html Overall, I like the simplicity, clean functionality of the stock you chose. For a second there (before I saw the pic) I thought you were gonna go all tacticool/tapco/crap-magnet on the stock & accessories. Cool that you're attempting to build/piece together as much as you can.
ETA: Don't forget to ensure your gas key is installed and staked properly. From a couple tacked-threads: Assemble your own LOWER, UPPER, FREE FLOAT, TRIGGER, GAS BLOCK - Step by step instructions! & Headspace, Torque values, and Barrel Break-in: Carrier Key Screws - 35 INCH pounds to 40 INCH pounds.

Thanks for your comments guys. I believe the front sight is new, therefore has no holes drilled for the taper pins. Sorry forgot to take a pic of the gas tube, but I do have it. I got a FF tube from RRA last night when I ordered my roll pins and such. Any experience with those? Seemed like pretty good quality at a decent price. I am trying to keep this build as simple and funcional as I can. That firs BCG you see in the pics is the assembled one that I bought from M&A. The other bolt, carrier, and gas key is supposedly a colt piece.....any ideas on how to tell? Thats is the one I eventualy want to asssemble and install in my rifle, having heard many times about the quality of Colt products. Thanks alot for your comment guys, they are greately appreciated. |

Does it have a C stamped on it? And a bolt that has QC and MP markings? |

I know the carrier is marked with a "C" but I'm not sure about the bolt. I have the bplt, carrier, gas key, and a DPMS BCG parts kit. Anything else you think I will need?
Oh and the M&A LPK was a breeze to install and seems to function well. You will be very pleased. Thanks for your help guys. |

If you're going to go with a free float rail, then ditch the FSB and get a gas block. You'll save yourself some hassle.
It is possible to get the FSB aligned and installed using fairly rudimentary tools. I attached my barrel to its upper, then put the handguard cap and FSB on. Of course, my upper had a carry handle, so take this for what it's worth. Anyway, I aligned the FSB by turning the whole rig upside down and making sure the ears on the FSB and the ears on the upper were all touching on a flat surface. Once I was satisfied, I used C-clamps to make sure the FSB and upper wouldn't move. (Put something like a micro-fiber towel between the C-clamp and upper/FSB.) I then proceeded to drill my pin holes out using a 1/8" drill bit. I suppose roll pins would work fine here, but I used a 2/0 taper pin reamer to ream the holes. Then I installed the correct taper pins. Or you could have someone else do it. Or just go with a gas block. *Shrug* |
| Ya i thought about going with a gas block but I really like the look of the stock FSB. What is the problem with using a FF tube with the FSB? Sounds like a good idea with the reamer, any idea where I can get one? BTW I am using the stock taper pins for the FSB if that helps. Thanks for your help. |
