I've had AR's since Vietnam. Today I went to pick up a DPMS I won on a local action today but ended up paying an additional $750 and got a Colt 6940. Im trying to get my 2 grandsons involved, thinking I might get them a receiver as a gift and let them go from there. I'm gunna like this place I can tell and hope you can put up with me.
Most of my AR's are Colt. I do have a DPMS that I won free and clear a few months ago but I haven't shot it yet. There's a lot of new AR manufactures out there now, which ones are best and what ones should I stay away from? |

Avoid anything made by vulcan/hesse/blackthorne or whatever they may call themselves tomorrow to run from their past reputations. If you are looking at a rifle that is an unknown post up and I'm sure you'll get reviews around here. Welcome aboard, and thank you for your service. |

Welcome aboard! I think the ars to avoid would be anything not made of mil/standard spec parts like a carbon15 or anything like that. Also anything not made in the USA. Non USA handguns are okay but rifles never buy anything not made in the USA.
Edit: also always buy from reputable sources like brownells, midwayusa, bravo company, etc. lots of fake air soft toys out there ready to piss you off. |

OK. What about just receivers? Lots of manufactures, I want to buy 3 of them but I want good quality, something that will last for years. What do you suggest? Maybe I should start another thread? I'll search in the mean time. Thanks! Uppers and lowers? Mega, Rainier, and Noveske are my favorites. Spikes Tactical has some great offerings. |
| I went through this with a Nephew recently.. I gathered all budget parts (most PSA blems) and helped him build his first AR . He is 12 so we did 22lr he loves it and when he is ready and his pocket supports it we will do a 223. My opinion is Mil Spec or Better. |

Noveske are expensive, but probably the most revered. |

This. ^ I think a forged Mega upper/lower combo would make a great gift. Welcome to barfcom!

Daniel Defense makes really awesome uppers and complete rifles. Top notch.
For high quality at a more reasonable price, take a good look at Spikes Tactical and CMMG. Spikes Tactical has a great reputation for their uppers. I have one of their uppers on my carbine build and consider it to be very high quality for an affordable price. |

I have hit refresh several times and pics of these 5 rifles are not loading still. Here's 2. My HBar is at another location. I gave one to my grandson and the first one I had was stolen. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a394/Merrell/dc352b9e7df3e781667729bff34127f2_zpse4c56784.jpg Top one is a DPMS, bottom is my 6940. Both unfriend at this time. |

So I guess that means that all those foreign made Mausers, AK's, FAL's, and G36's are all a bunch of inferior junk . If you were referring to AR's, I personally have never seen a foreign made AR in the US. Even the M16's that were manufactured in the Philippines for their military are quite good quality. The Chinese made commercial AR15's that are imported into Canada are also said to be good quality... probably at least a lot better than some of the AR15 commercial crap that is made here.

| I was at Cabala's yesterday. There was a guy looking at a DPMS. The guy behind the counter was telling him that a DPMS was basically a POS and was trying to sell him a AR Sig. I think the customer settled on a Smith & Wesson. I've heard a lot of bad things about the DPMS, I have one but never shot it. My 6940 was twice as much as a DPMS. What's the scoop? |
| The first one was a Ducks Unlimited raffle. It's the rifle pictured. Cost $20 for the ticket. The second rifle I "won" at Pheasants Forever auction. That means I still paid for it, I was the high bidder. If you ever want to be around like minded people attend functions like Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Friends of the NRA, etc. they will always have rifles that are up for auction or are being raffled off. |

I think Colt or Spikes would be good for them. I have both, and they are a great value, particularly the Spikes. I also saw a suggestion or two for Daniel Defense. All of these are great.
It really just depends what your finances are looking like. If they're not even into the hobby yet, you might actually consider just going with the DPMS to see if they even like this sport. I mean, Colt and especially Daniel Defense are too nice if they are only going to go to the range once a year. They won't be able to really appreciate it. |

My real grandson just enlisted in the Navy, he's going to be a gunners mate. The other is my grandson because he married my granddaughter. Both are gun crazy. When my Navy grandson graduated from high school is bough him a Colt AR, the one that's chambered in 22, not really a AR but looks like it. Anyway, since I'm buying 2 uppers and lowers I think the DMPS quality should be just fine. I don't want junk but I don't need top of the line either. I might build one myself along with the grandsons. A few months ago the American Riflemen built an AR, I need to find that article and re-read it, I think they were using some nice components. This will be fun. |
| You might also check out Palmetto State Armory, good solid quality parts at very good prices. Just stay away from the PTAC parts unless cheap is more important to you than quality. You can build a complete gun there for <$500, just be aware it will probably take 2-3 weeks to ship. |
