Why is it that I alway have to give the magazine an extra slap on the bottom to get the first round to come up high enough to chamber? I slam the magazine home when I put it in, but I always have to smack it an extra time for the first round to come up.

I would guess your magazine catch is loose. Give a turn or two to tighten it up, then try again.

When you load your mags, give them a smack on the rear spine to seat the rounds flush with the rear of the mag. They'll feed much more reliably that way, and this problem should go away.
