After purchasing my FIRST ar I went and shot about 200 rounds through her and obviously want to clean the weapon.  It is a S&W MP15 and I cannot seem to get the pins out that hold the lower and upper together.  It may seem silly but I dont want to take a hammer and brass punch to the pins just yet.  Any of you have the same problem?  They are just really tight and will not push out which some have told me is a good problem to have(the tight fit).  Any suggestions would be great.

The Pivot and Takedown pins can be tough to remove at first. Over time they will loosen up. There are companies that make special, non-marring tools to remove the pins, but any non-metallic item that you can use to push against the pins will work.

If necessary use a wood dowel and hammer to tap loose the pins.

ETA: I stress non-metallic because if you slip with a metal object trying to remove the pins then your next post will be asking how to cover up scratches in your receiver.

I just use the end of the cleaning rod (without the brush) to pop it out.  Just tap it and it should move out.

the pins won't budge because it's new. the little detents (inside) that holds the pins in aren't "rounded over" yet. the first few times you pop the pins, they'll be kinda hard to budge first.

put a punch on 'em, and tap it with a hammer. i can pretty much guarantee that, once they move a little, you'll be able to pull them the rest of the way by hand.

once the pins are open, you'll notice a little groove milled into them [lengthwise]. put a *little* lube in there. it'll help remedy the sticky pins.

Thats excellent guys.  That was the kindof reassurance I needed.  Being new to black rifles, it really helps to have a good source of info.  Much appreciated.

Sometimes if you have a sticky rear take down pin you can apply pressure with your thumb on the pin and gently tap the butt on a table (or tree or whatever) and it will pop loose.  Learned that one at Leonard Wood in '88.
