Cobbled it up for my proto-AR-15. What do ya'll think?

Looks cool, I'd love to see the whole rifle

It will look better stuck into the heart of bin laden.

That's not bad!  Screws instead of rivets, and the smooth handle certainly looks different than the grooves or checks.  I think it works as a 'prototype" bayo!

Thanks. That was my thinking exactly. I chose to leave the handle in the natural plastic rather than paint it etc. Amost has a "mottled" appearance. Looks dang cool if I do say so myself!

I like the smooth handle better than the stock checkered ones. If you build it, would they come? I'd certainly consider buying a set, although my plan was making wooden ones. I like this better.

If the bayonet lug is movable consider it closer to the muzzle so it mounts like the M14.

What are the rings between the flash suppressor and the bayonet mount for?

Great minds think alike! (kind of, sorta)... here's mine...

For launching stuff.

One ring is supposed to have a seal washer of some sort.  And I guess there may even be an add-on sight thingy that is used to aim while launching stuff.

Thanks for the explanation.

Just got my Portuguese variant AR10 manual off fleabay.  Here is a photo that shows the laucher site thingy.  My guess is that some sort destructive device is involved.

And another photo showing how the bayonet looks on the business end.

The black and white photos are from and old (1961) manual for Dutch AR10.  I posted them because the flash-hider used by several retro-AR15's is from that same Portuguese variant AR10. (see photos of jntmjt1 and Magnus rifles)

I thought the bayonet was fairly specific to the rifle.  However, these bayonets can go for $300-600 so there has been no experimentation.

Wondered what the little "block" on the front face of the FSB was for. Cool... As in all things legacy AR-10.
BTW its an easy mod to adapt the M7 to the Porti FH/GL.

Magnus,

Did you have the barrel custom machined? It looks like everything is integrally machined into the barrel.

HHollow is right in that the bayo was made specifically for the Portuguese AR10 by Artillerie Inrichtingen.  I believe production was estimated at no more than 1600 units and pretty much all of them went to dirty little wars in hot places, so survivors are pretty scarce.

I saw one of those sell for right around $1000 (about a year ago, I think).  I paid about half that for mine, though––after that sale–– so the high price may have been a fluke.  (You know how crazy some people get on those auction sites!)

Some details.

Its a standard GI barrel with a old one piece Portuguese AR-10 grenade launcher/flash hider sleeve attached. I installed it in the same fashion as it was on the AR-10. I made a .630 dia bushing for it and then slid it on and pinned it to the barrel.

The grips will fit an M7 bayonet which will fit an AR15/M16. The M4 bayonet for an M1 Carbine will not fit an AR15. At one time Northridge had just the grips for under ten bucks.
