ALL I WANT is a high quality fixed 4x scope with a mil dot reticle and turrets for W/E rather than screw adjustments. I don't need, nor do I desire to pay for any battery powered anything. No reticle illumination is necessary, although I wouldn't complain about fiber optic/tritium or similar. I'm trying to build an optics array that will never require batteries. I cannot seem to find a scope that meets my needs. Trying to build a badass AR15, Help please:
-Fixed 4x -Mil-dot reticle -W/E turrets preferred, screws allowable. -High Quality -Price is not really a concern. Real simple. |

For a fixed 4x on an AR, buy an ACOG. Yep. Pricey, but it's exactly what your looking for I think. Well yes but no. Active duty servicemember here, very familiar with that ACOG. We call it an RCO (Rifle Combat Optic), but you could say it's a tool of the trade. I don't really like the look. Trying to find a mil dot scope. |

Do you know that at 4x, a mil-dot reticle would be almost impossible to use? It would be so small that you would have a hard time discerning the dots. I think you may not be familiar enough with a mil-dot to know that it would be a terrible reticle for a fixed 4x application. That's why optics like an ACOG do not have them.
Now, you may be thinking "What about all those 3-9x or 3.5-10x scopes that have a mil-dot reticle?" Well, the mil-dot reticle on MOST of those scopes can only be used properly at full magnification because it stays the same size at all magnifications, and is "tuned," so to speak, only at full power. So, how would you properly range with it if it appeared to be the same size at 3x as at 9x? You can't. On spendier scopes with the reticle in the first focal plane, the reticle can be used at all magnification levels since it gets larger as you zoom in, but trust me, a mil-dot is too small to easily and speedily discern at 4x to actually use it. The reason you cannot find one is because the manufacturers understand that a fixed 4x with a mil-dot is not a useable combo, so they don't make it. That's the bottom line. Get a 4x with a ballistic type reticle. |
| What about a druganov type 4x? Kalinka Optics has them with various mounts, even picatinny, a few different reticles and by all accounts the glass if pretty good. They are soldier proof and pretty reasonably priced too. I am talking about the Russian and Belorus versions, I haven't looked through the cheaper Romanian ones I see for sale for much cheaper. |

It's not "mil-dot" but it's pretty effective. No batteries required, just optional. |
