Is there any major disadvantage for going with a standard fixed front sight on a 16in carbine.  I'm looking at buying a new upper with a flip up rear sight.  I may mount an aimpoint on it or a scope im not sure.  I have a fixed carry handle on my rifle now and wanted some options.

Thanks

The standard mil spec front sight can obscure the view for anything other than the standard handle style rear sight or MBUS raised type....

Do a google search and look at some pics for details.

Think about what you will be doing with it.

Biggest disadvantages is it will be in a red dots sight picture, but with a 1/3 mount and focusing on the target its not an issue.

Biggest advantage is that is the strongest gas block/fixed front sight out there for an AR15.

So am I better off with a complete flat top with a pop up front and rear sight to give me more options for optics?

Not necessarily. It will blur out under high magnification with a scope, and will always be there if your RDS takes a dump.

I'm thinking an EOTECH with a magnifier.  Will the fixed front sight be a hindrance or am I better off with front and rear pop up sights.
Thanks

I would go with an Aimpoint, FSB, and no magnifier.
Here's what it looks like.

It doesn't get in the way, Just put the dot on where you want the bullet to go and pull the trigger. It's as simple as that.
Just like pistol shooting focus on the front sight, Well in this case you focus on the dot.
I like a way I was told it. Put the thing on the thing and press the thing.

You will be good like that, but remember always focus on target with that setup.

I prefer a fixed front sight, even with a red dot.
You don't notice it at all using the red dot because you are focused on the target and the front sight blurs out.
The FSB is rugged and simple
Plus, if you need to use BUIS you only have to flip up the rear, not both.

Eotech with magnifier?  The front sight will all but disappear.  Blurred shadow in the lower portion.  Without the magnifier, you will see the sight and have to force yourself to ignore it or as others have said, you'll focus on it without a rear sight for reference and the dot sort of becomes meaningless.  Train yourself to ignore the post and you'll be fine.

This is just personal preference.  I prefer flip up front because the object of your focus is so different between a red dot and a iron sight.  With irons you want to focus on front sight post.  With red dot your are focusing on target.  Having a flip up forces my mind to re-focus on the proper sight picture as needed.  Irons down?  Focus on target.  Irons up?  Focus on front sight post.  But that's just the way my mind works.  YMMV.
