Ok SO doing my first build. Looking for a FH for a 14.5" barrel to bring it legal. As I dont have a lot of experience and as this will be permanently mounted I am trying to make the best choice. In consideration are AAC Blackout, Phantom 5C1, and the FSC556. First let me say that this is basically a SHTF type lightweight build.
Ok so it seems like everything I read, I can find something saying the opposite. My main questions are: 1. From the empirical photos I have seen the Blackout is the best FH out there. Not by much over the vortex but slightly. But I read a lot about a tuning fork sound. Anyone know of any video or empirical evidence of this? DOES THE BLACK OUT REALLY HAVE A TUNING FORK EFFECT? 2. Everyone seems to be wild over the FSC556. I am not sure I like the idea of having something do two things half way. But I understand the rational. But I read a lot of complaints about the loudness of the brake. HOW MUCH LOUDER IS A FSC556 THAN A PLAIN FH? 3. I have read alot that the phantom is a good but not blackout level FH. It also claims to be a compensator. But I have seen nothing on the compensation ability. WHERE DOES THE PHANTOM 5C1 FALL IN LINE WITH FH AND COMP? and 4. guess I have always falling into the training would accomplish the same thing as a comp/brake. WHAT TYPE OF SITUATION WOULD TRAINING NOT ACCOMPLISH THE SAME AS A COMP/BRAKE? Thanks! I cant even explain how valuable this board has been! |

I have the SE Vortex which is similar to the Blackout and I also have the FSC556. I also have the Surefire brake and A2 flash hiders.
Vortex's and Blackout's will occasionally make that "ting" noise. It is not a big deal. It really pales in comparison to the sound of the round going off. The only time it really bugs people is when they're dry firing their weapon at the TV, then it's real noticeable. The FSC556 is "louder" than an A2 hider, but no where near as loud as my Surefire brake. The people who are off to the side of you will notice the difference. I have been very happy with my FSC556 and I'm planning on using another one on a build I'm doing. It actually does a very good job at controlling muzzle movement as well as flash. I think the FSC556 is a good alternative for folks who are looking for something that does both or who may live in a state where FHs are regulated. ETA: Brakes are useful to get your muzzle back on target quickly. A good example is shooting a timed accuracy stage in 3-gun. They absolutely suck in CQB where the blast from the brake in a confined area (like a narrow hallway) can be disruptive to yourself or your teammates. You can obtain a balance of speed and accurate shot placement through training without using a brake. Equipment can never make up for a lack of training. |
