Just wanted to know if there was a difference. A guy in an acrticle touched on it and then didn't go into detail to explain either one?

Not as far as i know.  A sound supressor might totally hide flash.

Well in the magazine " Special Weapons, for Military and Police" article " Maximizing the AR15" written by Chuck Taylor: Quote: the four pronged open ended unit from Smith enterprises the "Vortex" is by far the most effective in good flash suppressor and has the bonus of enhancing accuracy. The Vortex draws off the expanding powder gases more quickly (the idea behind flash suppression, as opposed to flash hiding). This is where I was at a loss. But he doesn't go any further to explain?

From a LEGAL standpoint, there is no difference.

From a FUNCTIONAL standpoint, there is.

The first devices were flash HIDERS, typically cone-shaped muzzle attachments designed to hide the bright center of the muzzle flash from the shooter, to help decrease night blindness.  These don't decrease the actual flash, they just shield the user from it somewhat.

Later, flash SUPPRESSORS were developed.  These typically have slots to cool and dispurse the muzzle gasses, actually reducing the amount of flash the gasses create.

Again, the primary objective of a flash suppressor is to reduce the loss of low-light vision adaption of the shooter at night.  However, flash suppressors obviously DO work to reduce the chance of visual detection from the enemy as well.

In addition, flash suppressors are vital when using low-light-amplification ("night-vision") equipment.  Without it, the amplifier tube will either burn out or the protection circuit will constantly turn it off, leaving the shooter blind.
