This might be a silly question, but is a flash hider really needed? Most varmint set-ups don't have them, but almost all other set-ups do. I guess my real question is, will you get alot of 'flash' without one? I've used a 9mm RRA carbine without a flash hider and haven't noticed any excessive muzzle flash, but haven't tried a .223/5.56 set-up to compare. Most of the sellers at the last gun show I attended said no flash hider is really needed. What are some other comments on this???

No, a FH is not needed. During the daytime you probably won't see any flash, but at night might be different.

Most of us have FH's because we like our AR's as close to the military configuration as possible.

Even on a sunny day, I could clearly see the flash of XM-193 from my 16" carbine before I removed the thread protector and put a Vortex on it.

I put the FS on it because it's my HD carbine. If I ever had to shoot it at night with that kind of flash, it would surely make me see spots for a while.

Dont forget that a lot of people are running shorter barrells.  The flash hider is used to meet the minimal length requirement of a non SBR.

You can see a nice little fireball with a 16" barrel and no FH.

I use a fh because I want to be able to put my huntin rifle nose down in the dirt without worrying about anything getting stuck in the bore. Plus, a vortex allows you to not be temporarily blinded during the last few minutes of the hunt when you need to make a follow up shot (something I haven't needed to do yet but, you never know). And of course, deer and piggies can't see me either.

FH dont hurt imo, so why not--and it does help at night, esp w/ the shorter bbls...

maybe those guys at the show were just saying FHs werent needed so they could get rid of thier banned ARs

Its a combat weapon and needs something to protect the crown and rifling origin.

Check out the"None" pic.  That's why a flash hider is needed.  Varmints are usually hunted in the day, plus, the *boom* usually lets them know you're there more than the flash, so I guess a FH is not all that important on a varmint rifle.

Also, the flash from a 5.56 is a lot greater than from 9mm.

and flash hiders look cooler.  :)

I've shot XM193 and M885 out of my 16" rifle at night with and without the FS.

I'll keep it on thank you.

- Varmint and target rigs need to be as accurate as possible and threading a barrel and torquing on a flash hider adds stress that harm accuracy.

- That type of shooting is normally done during the day.

- That type of shooting doesn't normally require quick follow-up shots so there's plenty of time for night vision to recover.

- Those barrels are normally longer and the longer the barrel is the less flash there is at the muzzle.

Thanks for the FH info, think I'll 'rethink' this and stay with one.
