Now this may sound silly, but as stated before I am a FNG!

Does the standard military type flash hider have any value as a muzzle brake?

Or does it simply diffuse the muzzle flash.

I am wondering if it would be worth while to buy a new complete "pre-ban" upper next fall.

In the military it is for muzzle flash only.  Except for the M82/M107 Barrett .50 cal rifles.

No.  If it's the A2 style with no slots on the bottom it has some value as a compensator*.  But the value of it is to diffuse muzzle flash.  (To the naked eye--I'm told it makes the flash bigger in night-vision.)

* A compensator provides a downward force to counter muzzle climb.  A brake provides a forward force to counter felt recoil.    The A2 FS should work as a compensator, but minimally.  The real reason for the lack of slots on the bottom is to keep it from kicking up dust when shooting prone.

I am wondering if it would be worth while to buy a new complete "pre-ban" upper next fall.

It'd be cheaper to have a FS added to your existing barrel.

to answer the second question.
i feel you need two uppers.
one for target shooting and one for plinking.
it sounds like you have one that could be a potential nail driver.  for about 350.00 you can pick up a M4 upper with bolt.  it would be a great investment if you shoot a lot.  a local gun smith shouldn't charge more than 50.00 for the threading work.  plus 30.00 or so for the FH.
