I'm wanting to do some messing around with flash hider/compensator designs. Aluminum is way faster to work with on my (small) tools, but will it handle the heat and stress for a couple of mags, or should I use steel? The final gizmo will be steel for sure, just hoping I can get away with 6061 for prototypes.

Use aluminum for protos............it will work, as long as you are testing if it works, not blasting away. Oh, and don't forget the difference in heat dynamics. It should be ok for testing though........ if not, it will fly down range with the round. But i doubt it.

Aluminum will be fine for testing.  Back to back beta mag dumps might cause some erosion... but I doubt it would be severe enough to cause any concern.

I'm mostly concerned about the brake heating up faster than the barrel and unscrewing, but since I'll probably never shoot more than 30 rounds through one it shouldn't be much of an issue. Thanks for the help. Now to get my shop organized. I'm not exactly sure where the mill and lathe are right now
