My friends 16" has the A2 mine is actually a 14.5" with the Phantom, his is as quiet as a 20" while mine will take out my left ear drum ! Will mine quiet down if I swap an A2 back on it ?

The Noveske KX3 brake/flash suppressor dampens the sharp report of it, still going to be loud though.

Which are you asking about?

The Phantom Brake?  (Yes it is louder)

or The Phantom Flash Supressor? (no it's not louder)

In general all muzzle brakes work by redirecting the gas to the rear (or at least mostly sideways with some rearward component to the vector and/or o "push" the rifle forward (which has the same effect of diverting gas to the rear.))  That means more noise for anyone to the sides and to the rear.

They are in my opinion a:

1. pain in the ass

2. a discourtesy to everyone else on the range

3. a great way to do additional damage to your hearing in a field situation where hearing protectors are not always an option.

4. a total waste of money on an AR-15 given the already low recoil and low muzzle rise traits of the weapon, especially in semi-auto mode.

5 a great way for vendors to make money off the ignorant, the wannabees, and the shopping mall ninjas.

Sounds like I need to get rid of the Phantom, will it still be legal with just the A2 on it ?

On a 16" barrel, it could be naked and still be legal

My barrel is 14.5 though !

oh, well you have to use something a little longer than an A2:
Vortex
Phantom
OPS Inc. brake
Bi-Lock
MSTN QC brake

A vendor here also makes a longer A2, can't remember who, even though I bought one lol

No you'll have to put something on it or get an SBR.
To the guys who say it's a disservice to others at the range, I disagree, especially since many guys at my range a are shooting 7mm,magnums, 30.06 and other crazy loud load.  Also for people like myself who live in AWB states we have to get a preban, get a muzzle break, or bull barrel.  Although I haven't tried it myself yet, I've heard that the midievil muzzle break is surprisingly close to a regular surpressor in noise and flash surpression and it looks vicious. I've also heard that the QCB does a great job at controlling noise. It looks like something for a match wepon though. So I think you have options and thank goodness that they are coming out with quiter breaks and Breaks that look more tacticool while also reducing some Flash for AWB state folks who have at least one postban in there aresnal. I'ts nice to have some new lowers too.

7mm Magnums and especially .30-06's are not "crazy loud"1...unless of course they are using a muzzle brake. And in that case we are right back to talking about a total lack of courtesy on the range.

Personally,  I see no real need for a muzzle brake until you start getting recoil heavier than a .300 Win Mag, or perhaps a lightweight rifle in .300 Win Mag.

OK well crazy loud is certainly a relative term, but I was trying to suggest that being in a port next to a guy firing one of the big hunting bolt action rifles is louder than a .223 even with a break. And you are missing the point about AWB states. We have less options. If you want an all new rifle i.e. new lower too (not preban) which are like 15 years old. You either get a break or a bull or your breaking the law.

I would love it for them to drop the whole break thing but politicians are useless somtimes.  I love my preban but if I want a new lower too which I do,  Now I have to pick a break that doesn't look stupid and actually does something functional or have nothing at all on the end.

I thought that we just in Germany have stupid gunlwas

For the Brake: What do I want from a Brake ? That it will eliminate muzzelrise. What will teh muzzelrise do ? Help me to shot faster and still accurate and to get me faster from one target to the other and alike. Why that ? care I want to shot faster then the other guy I competit against...trough...right ?

So it depense on what I want to do with a rifle...You can´t just say brake´s are allways good or bad...

Anyone tryed the Mini-Y Brake ?

You mean the 'Blast Enhancer'?  Yeah I've tried it.  Works fine for the shooter - just don't be one of the people that happen to be around a shooter using one.

With a straight line stock and light recoil to begin with, the AR15 doesn't really need one, but with a brake, it will reduce muzzle flip and let you get back on target faster.  I never could tell much of a difference between a flash suppressor and my OPS Inc. 2 port brake, but on an AR10, despite the forewarning from the fine folks that sold them to me that the 308 brake may not work as well as the 223 version due to its more powerful cartridge, both the MSTN QC brake and the Jetsuppressors 4 port brake work far better than either with a flash suppressor or no muzzle device at all.
